occasional beep?!

#1 Post by gehx » Sat Dec 09, 2006 2:25 pm

Ok, this is a weird problem.

I have a t22 that I got off of flebay about 2 months ago, I installed XP Pro SP2 (has all of the latest updates). Every once in awhile it'll beep (1 short while XP is running .. kinda sounds like when the AC adapter is unplugged from the AC port). There is absoultely no indication why it beeped (nothing on my screen saying what supposedly happend, no alert window). So, I checked my system logs and nothing out of the ordinary is there. I then downloaded and ran the IBM PC Diag disc (ibm_t22_pcdiag.iso) which I found a link for in these forums and ran all of the tests, everything checks out.

The comp boots fine, no issues there.

This is kinda driving me nuts. When it beeps it's totally random, I don't have to be doing anything. I've ran the comp w/ the AC adapter connected and unconnected, it will still beep @ random times.

Not sure what the problem might be, in fact, I don't even know what to look for @ this point.

Please post if you have any questions about my setup, have some idea of where I can start looking for this problem or have an idea what might be causing this annoying random beep issue.

Thx.

EDIT:

I also tried running it w/ the AC attached and the battery disconnected, still get the random beep.

How long does the battery last?

I have a later model that use to beep
It turned out to be faulty battery pack.

about 1.5 hours, but, like I said it'll beep when the battery pack isn't connected and the AC is plugged in.

Btw, what I'm mainly concerned about is that there's a problem w/ my laptop and it's not being reported by XP.

Something I forgot to add...when I was running the T22 diag tools disk the laptop never beeped.

Does it happen when you're typing? If so, you're probably just typing too many keys at once. If that's the problem, here's the fix:

Device manager method is the best, for me.

You can also disable beeps in your bios. If it isn't the keyboard, then I dont know what it could be.

Sometimes, yes, sometimes, no. I don't have to be doing anything for the laptop to beep, it could just be sitting on the table w/o any interaction from me and beep.

It worries me that this beep is occurring and the OS isn't reporting a reason why. It may be and I'm not looking in the right place(s) to find it. I've checked the Event Viewer and don't see anything odd.

This has me really confused.

2-3 years ago using my Thinkpad A22e I also got a random beep, but not the same sound as when you unplug the AC cord. I think it has to do with the hard drive. Are you sure it's well connected to the planar card? Try checking the HDD. The beeps I was getting was like a long beeeeeep

I have a T23 with WinPro SP2 and Ubuntu on it. When I'm using Ubuntu I have no issues. But when I'm using Win every once in awhile, maybe twice a week or so when the laptop comes out of standby my mouse will lock up for 3-4 secs, then release for 15-20 secs, then lock-up again, then release, etc. for about a minute.

Then I hear a beep and all is well. My guess is Windows, or some other program is checking for updates, or checking the HDD, or something. It's no big deal, like I said it doesn't happen all the time and it only lasts for about a minute or so. But I too would love to find out what is causing it.

So weird, I get this random beep (yes, same sound as when you disconnect the AC adapter) time to time and in fact I just got it tonight when I was typing in my password on hotmail.com; I think I have gotten this beep 4 times since I've owned my T22 and it is always when I am typing. Nothing bad has happened so I sort of ignored it.
