PIII 500 vs. PII 366
Hi !
What's the difference between those two CPU, in terms of performances ?
I've read somewhere that the PIII 450 was a lot (twice ?) more powerful than the PII 366 ? Sounds strange, no ? Eve if those are really different...
I search benchmarks, but I don't find anything...
Can you help me ?
Thx.

Pentium III, especially later models are above and beyond Pentium II. Architecture, speed...everything.

Re: PIII 500 vs. PII 366
I had a TP600E with PII 366 and an X20 with PIII 600. I benchmarked both with PCMark2002, and they scored 946 and 1617 respectively. So, even a 600MHz PIII is less than twice as fast as a 366MHz PII. If we assume that PIII processors are linearly related, then a 450MHz PIII would be 1617 x 450/600 = 1213. That's higher than the 366MHz PII's score but not that much.WarMachine wrote:I've read somewhere that the PIII 450 was a lot (twice ?) more powerful than the PII 366 ?

It was strange to me to read that PIII 450 was so overrated... So, I'm less surprised to read what PianoWizard wrote.
I will take a look at the article on wikipedia, I will certainly learn many things (or remember them !!!
)
BTW, is buying a PIII 500 that cost 10€ a good thing ? As I said in another post, here, in France, it's more difficult to find mobile CPU.
Thx !

That sounds like a decent deal, especially since mobile processors are so hard to find in France. I think the 600E will be noticeably faster after the upgrade. Just curious, how much RAM does it have, and what operating system is it running?
BTW, how do you like your Dell L400? I have been tempted to buy one on eBay many times.

My 600E has 288 MB RAM, a 5K100 20GB (5400 rpm / 8 MB cache) HDD.
I'm planning to upgrade RAM and HDD (if I have enough bucks, of course !!!
)
The Dell L400 :
It's a nice machine, with a pros, but many cons, IMHO...
Pros :
- Light,
- Excellent build quality,
- Nice screen.
Cons :
- Becomes very hot under the CPU (on the left of the laptop),
- Makes a lot of noise when the fan runs,
- Only accepts 256 MB RAM (in one slot...),
- You must remove the keyboard to change the RAM (and the screws are very little),
The keyboard is rather good, but not as good as the 600s, of course (nothing can beat a keyboard of TP600 !
)
I think it can accept 512 MB of RAM, if you use double height double sided memory module, but it's very difficult to find this type of memory.
I don't want to keep it, I sell mine. Even if the 600E has less power, I prefer it a whole lot more !
