Thinkpad (R50e) CD/DVD problem

Having trouble with my CD/DVD drive. Initially though it was the brand of disks used but they seem to work fine on other machine.

The drive initially had trouble when trying to burn CD through MP10 but then also other programmes. I then had trouble listening to CD on the drive. Now I can but its a bit "crackly" and seems to take a while to find the next track if I skip forward.

Does it look like drive is on way-out? Sods law, had machine 12 months on 14 November bit it didnt start getting used really until the xmas.

I am R50e user too. Mine is Centrino . Which OS you are using?
Windows XP ? I never heard of this problem. But will try to solve.
Did you try to update CD/DVD firmware version? Windows XP was preloaded or what ? 1 of my friend have COMPAQ laptop with DVD burner, he having similar problem. When he burns msoer bayer DVD nothing burns but if he burns SONY DVD it burns and he can read data on it later on. All brand cd's can burn on that writer but
in case of DVD, he can only burn SONY DVD's. Did you try to burn
cd's using Nero or Sonic burning
