T42 2378DTU

#1 Post by kale » Sun Sep 05, 2004 5:09 am

I have read many topics in this very interesting forum and I have not found any opinion about this "economy" model...

I would like to buy my first thinkpad, and I thought that the price was ok for a modest "starter".
My needs are limited (office, surf, sometimes photoshop, and of course DVD use in train or in plane), I would say also that I am concerned by brand (ok let's try ibm) and "portability" and that is why I prefered the 14" screen.

Thanks a lot in advance for your comments.

If you do photoshop, you will need more memory (ideally 1Gb). Might want to look at the Massachusetts or Ohio educational sites for better discounts than the standard express models (this one only has a 1 year warranty also). Otherwise, it's a fine machine!

Actually, I can get a french educational discount (1770 USD, that's a very good price here in Europe) with 3 years warranty and a 512 memory.
And I mainly use photoshop on my laptop, so forget about that.

If you are talking about just some occaisional photo editing of 3-4mb images,
512MB or RAM will be OK. I use Photoshop and some other Photo editing programs on my T42 with no issues. Also if you go with the 2378DUU you get a 40G HDD, and 256MB of RAM. YOu can easily add 256 or 512 to the RAM very cheaply. 256MB cost me $70,

And are users happy with it, or do they regret the beast (I mean 2379 DYU of course), for an extra 1100 USD (and extra weight, unfortunately)...

Can anyone buy from these educational sites? I have educational discount
through my university, but the prices are higher than the Massachusetts
educational site.

Just place an order on the site. That's what I did. The cheapest are the California and Ohio educational programs.
