ThinkPad Integrated 56K Modem Software 78mv05ww

#1 Post by GomJabbar » Sun Dec 10, 2006 1:09 pm

A heads up:

I went to the driver matrix page for my T42 today and saw the following modem software update.
ThinkPad NOV. 13, 2006
ThinkPad Integrated 56K Modem Software for 2000/XP/Vista 32bit

Version 7.56.00.00 for Windows XP/2000
Version 7.58.00.00 for Windows Vista 32bit
I installed the update and at one point during the installation I was asked if I wanted to launch NetWaiting when the installation finished. I checked the box just to see what it was about. I noticed a NetWaiting icon in the notification area, and after seeing that it was basically modem auto answer software, I closed the icon.

On reboot the icon was back in the notification area. I did not want this process running all the time, and I did not want to have to shut it down at every boot up. I could see no way to turn it off permanantly, so I unistalled the ThinkPad Integrated 56K Modem Software using Add or Remove programs. After a reboot, I reinstalled the modem software, but this time when the NetWaiting installation portion started, I cancelled the installation. Subsequently the Digital Line Detect installation started, and I installed that. Everything seems fine now, and I no longer have NetWaiting installed. NetWaiting is just not something that I am going to use.

It is a shame that the software does not allow shutting off the Netwaiting feature until it is needed. Like I stated above, you can close the icon and shut off NetWaiting, but it starts back up on reboot. I don't like programs that do this sort of thing. :x

Looking at the text file for the previous modem driver that I installed, it looks like it also had NetWaiting. I guess the difference this time is that previously I did not check the box to launch NetWaiting when the installation finished.

[I suppose someone will now post how I could have permanently shut off NetWaiting without uninstalling it, and without going to msconfig or Administrative Tools > Services.]
