Disk Defragmentation

#1 Post by The Bard » Sun Dec 10, 2006 7:42 pm

I have had a T60 for about 9 months. Several times I have successfully defragmented the hard drive using the Diskeeper Lite that came pre-loaded on the computer.

Now, however, the Diskeeper Lite program can neither analzye or defragment my hard drive. After clicking on "analyze" I get the the following error message: The anayze operation you requested failed to start on volume IBM_Preload (C:.).

And when I click on "defragment" I get a similar error message.

Does anyone have any ideas why this might be occurring and how to fix it? Thanks.

Isn't it a trial period deal?

I don't think so, especially because I keep being prompted to "upgrade" to the non-free version. The best I can tell, Diskeeper Lite is a free 'lite' version of the full Diskeeper, and it came pre-installed on my computer.

There is always XP's built-in defragmenter ... it's not Diskeeper, but it does work reasonably well ...

Diskeeper Lite should continue to work. I has on my computers.

You might try this since it is on sale for $20 down from $40 until 12/15.

If you read this forum, you will see that PerfectDisk 8.0 Defrag is the defrag of choice for most of us. Until Dec 15, it is reduced from $40 to $20 by using this checkout code: DEFRAGVISTANOW

It of course also supports Windows XP.

You should try to get Diskeeper Lite to work as it is indeed the "Lite" version. Although if you do upgrade, I would strongly recommend PerfectDisk 8.0 as well. :)

Is it activated per machine? Or would I be able to move it onto my next ThinkPad?

Thanks! The code works for the upgrade from 7 to 8 as well. Down from $20 to $10.

thanks for the link for PerfectDisk 8 and the discount code. I just bought and downloaded it. I ran my first defrag with it and I am real impressed. My Windows Defrag program is what I have relied on for years, been doing a weekly defrag with it; now I wonder what the heck it's been doing. I just defraged my computer about 4 days ago and it took about 15 minutes. My first degrag tonight with PerfectDisk took over 40 minutes and I notice that the boot area was all over the place when it started - now it's nice in-line.

Another great find from this great community. :D

The downloadable applications that I have are all transportable. If you want to confirm, email them, but today (Fri the 15th) is the last day.

Yes, I would agree. I downloaded the program onto my desktop and I am taking it on a flashdrive to put onto my husband's PC. It should not be a problem.

My copy of Diskeeper Lite just died on me with the same error message The Bard had: "The analyze operation you requested failed to start on volume IBM_Preload (C: )".

Found this thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... fragmenter

Downloaded the Power Defragmenter GUI and Contig combo - works a real treat. Will be moving it to my other thinkpads.

This forum's great :D

I've been playing around with Vopt. Since I defrag regularly I really can't comment on speed relative to the other software mentioned here, but I like the interface and some of the options not available on others I've tried (or maybe I just didn't "play" with the others as well!). The only software I can say I didn't like was something called O&O (it WAS really slow), but my last experience was several years back and it might have changed a lot since then.
