I had somethink like this happen w/ my G40....see if it works for you, too. It seemed like when I would pack it up at college and take it home with me, when I started it up the next time, the screen would be dark. The first time this happened to me, I had just reset my computer, and thought it was a driver issue...so I used another computer, and downloaded the video drivers, which didn't help,

and downloaded every other driver that I could find...eventually, (when I wasn't looking) the screen came back on, so I decided I must have found the problem.
The next time or two, I had my trusty usb flash drive in the bag with me, and would re-install the display drivers...which seemed to fix it, for some reason...even though the new ones I installed were the same as the ones I just replaced. One time, however, I was plugging in the flash drive, and I saw the screen flicker. I 'wiggled the flash drive' a little, and the screen came back to life!!

Since that 2-month stretch, I haven't had it happen but another time or two, but if it does, I just stick a flash drive in one of the back usb slots (seems the top one works better), and wiggle it a little bit.
If some of the guru's in here looked at the mobo, i assume, you would probably be able to see what is causing the problem...but my G40 has to get me through college, so I haven't 'performed surgery' on it, to see if I can spot the problem, and when I ordered it, it was top of the line, so it's still a real good computer...compared w/ what's common today. I'm operating on my 600X instead...
Anyhow, sorry about the rambling...see if that helps w/ yours...it has always fixed mine, when the screen didn't light up.
