Non-IBM X40 System Board sources

#1 Post by gtphill » Tue Dec 12, 2006 10:29 am

Hey all,

As a follow up to my thread on my X40, I think I have narrowed the error down to the keyboard, the keyboard connector, or the keyboard controller on the mainboard.

It seems the rebooting the system enough times (ie warming it up) causes the system to start to boot reliably. For instance, once it warmed up yesterday I was able to reboot it twenty plus times for a clean windows installation.

I am still not sure if it is the keyboard, the connector on the mainboard, they keyboard controller, or what.

If it does turn out to be the main board, I am going to need a new one. I crapped a brick when I saw how much they wanted for a new LCD, so I think buying it from the factory is not an option.

I am a graduate student, and am living on a combination of stipend and loans, so I don't have much money to throw around.

Does anyone know of a quality source for used/refurb/etc. x40 mainboards on the web, or here on the forum, in case I need a new mainboard? I have machine type 2386-xx2, (that is the 1ghz ulv processor). I have upgraded the ram (1.2GB) and hard drive (60gb Hitachi).

Help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,

I was in the same boat as you. Poor grad student. On the other hand, I knew it was the motherboard was fried. You can pick up parts on ebay for cheap, but you will have to wait. I see a motherboard go for less $100 about once every two weeks. I didn't wait, so I picked one of the buy-it-now's, which cost me $300. Still much cheaper than anywhere else.
