How To: Verizon EV-DO Sierra Wireless MC5720 WWAN Drivers

#1 Post by brc » Wed Dec 13, 2006 1:43 pm

How To Get Your Built In 1xEV-DO Sierra Wireless MC5720 mini-PCI card working in Windows Vista on a ThinkPad T60P (and likely other notebooks using this card)

Download and install this MSI: http://www.sierrawireless.com/resources ... USBMUX.msi

You will also need the Lenovo Hotkey driver to enable and disable the WWAN card using Function + F5. This can be obtained at http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-38953

Open Device Manager (start, right click computer, click properties, click Device Manager on Left)

Go to Other Devices and find your Sierra Wireless MC5720 card.

Right Click the entry and choose 'Update Driver Software', then 'Browse my computer for driver software', 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer.

Click 'Have Disk' and enter C:\Program Files\Sierra Wireless\USBMUX Drivers then click OK.

Under Model choose 'Sierra Wireless MC5720 Device' then click next. Click yes to the warning that the driver can not be verified as compatible.

4 new devices will be found by windows and it will bring up wizards to attempt to find drivers for them. Cancel all of these wizards as we need to install the drivers manually.

Under Other Devices in Device Manager again you will see Modem Port, Network Adapter, Serial Port, Serial Port,

The procedure to install the drivers for these devices is the same as above, using Have Disk and navigating to the folder above. Below is listed which Driver Corresponds to which device. Note, the drivers must be installed in the order listed. Device Name is what Device Manager calls the device before you install the driver, Model Name is what each driver is listed as in the Update Driver Software screen after you choose Have Disk.

Device name: Serial Port (both entries), Model Name: 'Sierra Wireless MC5720 NMEA Port'
Device name: Modem Port, Model Name: 'Sierra Wireless MC5725 Modem Device'
Device name: Network Adapter, Model Name: 'Sierra Wireless MC5725 1xEV-DO Network Adapter'

Press Function + F5 on your keyboard and turn the Wireless WAN on.

You can now setup your WWAN connection settings.

If you are using Verizon Wireless Broadband Access there are the steps necessary to configure your connection without using the VZAccess software.

If you do not use the VZAccess software you will not have access to session history information, SMS Text Messaging, or Signal Strength meters. I have not attempted to install VZAccess on Windows Vista as I find it unnecessary.

Click Start, Connect To, Then select the 'Setup a connection or network' link.
Select 'Setup a dial-up connection'
Click the 'Sierra Wireless MC5725 Modem Device'
In the Dial-up phone number enter: #777
In User name enter your wireless number followed by @vzw3g.com. For example, if your number is 8235551212, enter 8235551212@vzw3g.com as the username.
Leave the password field blank.

Name the connection 'Verizon Broadband Access'
Check the 'Allow other people to use this connection' box.
Click Connect.

If you are in a Broadband access coverage area it will connect. Now you need to change the connection speed.

Click Start, Connect to, select the 'Open Network and Sharing Center' link.
Choose the 'Manage network connections' link on the left.
Right click on Verizon Broadband Access and choose disconnect.
Right click again on the connection and choose properties.
Under the General Tab select the Sierra Wireless device and click Configure.
Change the maximum speed to '921600'
Click OK on all dialog boxes and connect again.

Thank you. Who are you and how did you figure this out? Does it really work with Vista RTM?

Problem with Fn-F5

#4 Post by tx_wright » Wed Dec 20, 2006 9:18 am

I followed these instructions but I am having one problem. The Hotkey utilities do not give me the option to turn the WWAN radio on or off. When I hit Fn-F5 I get a popup saying the 802.11 drivers need to be updated in order to use the application, assuming that is okay I just click past it and get the normal thinkpad screen. However the only radio listed on the popup screen is the Bluetooth radio. I checked the 802.11 driver and they are the latest available from Intel so I just guess that is a Vista incompatibility.

Any ideas why the WWAN radio is not showing up??

Thanks,
Scott

vista and wireless

#5 Post by johnp126 » Wed Dec 20, 2006 9:22 am

i haven't loaded any xp drivers on vista, i have with software but not drivers. my feeling is if you have a problem then it might corrupt the os and i don't want to have to rebuild.

if you use winkey and x you get a vista notebook management utility called windows mobility center, here you can turn off wireless etc.

Working on an X60?

#8 Post by robgarrett » Fri Dec 29, 2006 2:27 pm

Has anyone got this working on a Thinkpad X60? I have tried various combinations of drivers and keep running into the following problems:

1. I cannot turn the WWAN Radio on via FN+F5 (it's listed as off), but the LED says it's working

2. I see the Sierra Wireless 1xEV-DO Network Card in the Network profile list, but it has a red cross next to it.

3. After creating the VZW profile (literally following the instructions), after I connect I get an error 633 port in use.

I am using Vista RTM.

Any help appreciated.

When you loaded the ZVAccess Manager, what version did you load? The 6.0.6 or the one that is supposed to work with the Lenovo laptop.

I did everything as instructed, but I to cannot see the sierra connection when I do a fn+f5. All I see is bluetooth.

I am running a MSDN copy of Vista Enterprise.

I see the connection in network manager, but it cannot connect.

I tried both the XP version and Vista version of VZW Access, the XP version would not install, the Vista version gave me a message "this application has stopped working" - usually a crash.

To get the FN+F5 to work, install the latest version of Access Connections and the other supporting apps: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... TVAN-EAPAC

Let me know if you get the connection to work.

Thanks.

I loaded the software you mentioned and now I see 802.11, bluetooth and the wireless wan. I can turn everything on and off, but the wireless wan. The led on the bottom of the screen is always on, but when I click "on" in the access control screen.. the computer thinks for a couple of seconds and then nothing... it still says wireless wan is off.

I should say that when I got the computer, I didn't even boot it up on the preloaded XP. I put the vista disk in immediately and loaded it up. Maybe I have a bad card.

Yes, this is exactly what happened to me. At this point I am wondering if these drivers will not work on the X60, most readers in this thread are running the T60.

I never graced my laptop with XP and went straight to Vista RC2, and then RTM (MSDN). As soon as Vista is available for retail I expect we'll start to see drivers for the MC5720.

Fingers Crossed.

Did you try these drivers? I have a copy I can email especially if someone would put them up on the web.

No, I wanted to try these drivers but they are no longer available on IBM's FTP site. Can you email to rob@robgarrett.com, I can then put them online (as long as it is legal for me to do so).

Thanks.

I am unable to send to your email. There are two files, one 12 MB, the other 8 MB.

Finally! Got it to work on X60, Model 1706W7L

#17 Post by Vannareth » Tue Jan 02, 2007 4:46 pm

The instruction above works for me after many attempts. It turned out I didn't need the hot-key drivers at all and that was the one that prevented it to work, giving me error 633. I use the Vista "Connect to" to dial up. The VZ and Lenovo beta access manager failed miserably.

I am able to VPN to my office while on the daily bus ride of 15 miles, without any dropping so far. I am using RTM Vista & Cisco VPN client version 4.8.01.0590, running with Windows Firewall ON.

Establishing connection to cell tower is fast, I feel faster than Access Conn app. My download speed is around 700kbps and upload around 130.

Good luck to all who's trying.

well, I was able to load the files and drivers. Everything loaded well and easy.
I cannot activate my card through the software, but I assume I must call Verizon and set up an account with the card. I was hoping to use my current Verizon number and just get it billed to that.

I have a call in to my Verizon rep, so you should hear if it works tomorrow.

I managed to get as far as you did. I installed the Lenovo Access Connections, which attempted to activate my card. AC prompted my with a dialog with a toll-free number and ESN (the prompt appeared in a compatibility desktop).

I called the toll free number and was told by a Lenovo rep that I could transfer the EVDO card in my laptop to my plan, but my phone will stop working. For $80 a month I can have both laptop and phone online tsk.

luckily for me, I will be having my work pay for it.

$80 per month sounds steep too. I can get cell phone with just data plans (for email/calendar/contacts) for around $50 per month.

weird.

Hey, I got everything to work... kindof. I can connect using the Vista connect, but I can't get anywhere. I get an IP address but a gateway address of 0.0.0.0
I can do dns lookups, but that is because I am not going outside my network.

Second, when I try to run VZAccess manager 6.0.2 I get an error saying the WWAN device is disabled. Turn it on. I turn it on, it errors out right away, turn it off and it errors out after a few seconds.

Soooo close!

What is "a watcher software"? A particular program, if so which one?
Thanks.

it is a small program called Sierra Wireless Watcher. I loaded vers 0.6.55.

The zip file that I got from is 79WW03WW.zip. I am not sure where I downloaded it from. I had been downloading so many files to get this to work, I kind of lost track.
