IBMTOOLS and IBMWORK files on C: drive

#1 Post by whickman » Sun Sep 05, 2004 11:24 pm

I've noticed a rather large file on my C:\ drive on my x40, entitled IBMWORK. It has 884 MB of files in it, and appears to be a collection of patches and fixes.

Is this file really needed? Can it be deleted with no consequences?

I've also noted the file IBMTOOLS, which is 1.25 GB. This appears to have installation backups for a number of programs. Can some of these file backups be deleted without harm to save space?

IBMWORK should have been deleted by the startup process. It gets created and deleted by the Recovery process on the laptops I have had. You surely do not want to delete IBMTOOLS, but I can't say for certain about IBMWORK. JDHurst

C:\IBMTOOLS is the repository of IBM software applications.
C:\DRIVERS is the folder of driver explosions from which to install.
Installations take place in C:\Program Files and C:\Windows (usually \System32).

IBMWORK was a temporary file. I think its appearance means the original install was corrupted or did not complete. I have never seen it in a properly installed and working system.

So, can items in C:\DRIVERS be deleted, since they are the unpacked files from the zipped install files?

Can \IBMSHARE be deleted safely? It contains five files which appear to relate to restore & recovery.
