Changing HDD in X41

#1 Post by 19266287 » Thu Dec 14, 2006 9:32 am

Dear borthers

Please help. I am a low level user. I bought a X41 2525 CB1 October last year 2005. This is a very slow computer, but it is very handy. I am now thinking to change the HDD as the HDD volume is too small.

But, having seen an article at thinkwiki, I need to consult you guys.

First, I do not have a ultrabase nor the ultrabay optical drive. (I just bought the USB Combo one) And, in Hong Kong, there is no second hand x4 ultrabase available yet. (I have no money to buy a new one)

Secondly, my computer is with a 40GB HDD (HTC426040G9AT00), which is very small (I removed it from the HDD slot, it should be a Hitachi 9mm one). Therefore, I need to change it to 60GB.

Now, I see a Hitachi 60GB (HTC426060G9AT00) on sale at HK$1,000 which is very reasonable.

But, can you brothers tell me whether it will require me to update the so called firmware if I put this 60GB HDD into the slot. Or will it show error message from the screen?

Thanks a lot.

Hi,

You will need to mirror your old hard drive onto the new harddrive. The easiest way to do this, is to connect your new harddrive to your laptop through a 2.5" IDE <-> USB cable, which is available for around $10USD.

Then you need to use Acronis TrueImage (free trial of 15 days, which is more than long enough). Use this software to copy your old harddrive's data to your new harddrive. There are good instructions on the message board on how to do this step by step.

After that, you can take out the old harddrive from the laptop, and put in the new one. Then you'll be good to go.

Oh I think you have misunderstood my question.

My question is that

can you brothers tell me whether the thinkpad will require me to update the so called firmware if I put this 60GB HDD (HTC426060G9AT00) into the bay. Or will it show error message from the screen 2010?

Thanks

What is the "so called firmware"? BIOS?
What is "screen 2010"?

I upgraded my hard drive to the same one, or something that looks like it, and I did not encounter what you are describing.

I have no experience with the X41, however I believe that the problem you refer to is with T43 and T60 notebooks, and probably also the X60 series. I don't think it applies to the X41, which does not have the offending 915 chipset, if what I have read in other posts on this board is correct.
