T20 power problems... again...

#1 Post by markitoxs » Thu Dec 14, 2006 9:55 am

Hi everyone,

firtsly i would like everyone for maintining this forum so long, it's very hard to find actual info about T20 models. I read all the pages of the T20 problems (at this forum), and i noticed that there are more people with my problem, but i was not able to find a solution that might work.

Ok, I got the T20 that was working perfectly for some months. Just to notice that sometimes, when i pressed the power button it won't boot up, just the leds flashing. My way to solve this was, take out the battery press the button, plug the battery back, and that's all. Suddenly it stopped working. It just refused to boot. The battery led flashes, and the ¿CPU? one also (the led that is more to the left next to the power button). Just that. I looked forums and tried everything, none seem to work. And one day, without AC adaptor, it booted. I waited until the os got loaded, and then plugged in the ac. Everything ok. 5 Min later, blup! Shutted down. Refused to work again. I went mad... 1 week before, i tried to boot again, and for my surprise, it worked. I decided to wait. after 15 min everything ok, no shutdown. , but when i run a program , 3 sec after, shut down. Normally i had to wait like a few days to be able to boot, but when booted, it was shutted down. And last days, it even refused to boot. Does not matter how many days i waited... After reading more and more posts, i decided to buy a mainboard. It arrived a few days ago, but after dissasemblying it, and assemblying it again... does not work... i really love T20 and i want to try everything possible to bring it back to life...

Any ideas? Any suggestions?

Current Status is, power button pressed (ac or battery) and batt led, flashing. and the ¿CPu? (next to the power button ) flashes also. If i put the ac, while the battery is plugged, starts green, and then solid orange. Got a new CMOS battery. Got 1 old mainboard and a new one.

Thx for your time people.

Part of the problem appears to be a heat-related issue. Did you get a CPU with the replacement motherboard, or did you reuse the old one? Also, did the fan/heatsink have a thermal rubber/sponge? I suspect the T20 series suffers more than their usual share of thermal-related problems. One of the first things I'm doing with my T20's is to replace the fan assembly with one from a T21/T22 (you can get one on ebay for about $11 shipped - just search for the terms "cpu cooler T21"). I would replace the fan and see if that fixed the problem. If not, I'd try a CPU swap. If you've tried everything else, there isn't much more to do. For my part I'm avoiding T20's in preference to T23's.

The cpu had not any kind of thermal rubber/sponge. I did not get any new cpu, i just swapped the old one. I should definitely try to change the fan for a T21.I thought maybe it can be the cpu that is dead.

I will see for the fan, thx for your reply.

What's the history of the 2nd motherboard; is it known to be a good one?

You should have noticed the thermal rubber stuck to the underside of the fan, or else there should have been some white thermal paste. In the latter case, you should have put fresh paste on. It is quite possible that the cpu is dead but if it overheats it will shutdown. If the answer to phelix's question is yes then I would definitely suspect overheating as the culprit.

Just a suggestion, but could he download MobileMeter (assuming he gets it running again) ,which shows the temps of the CPU and HDD? It's such a small download timewise, I think I got it in under a minute.

Yes, Purcy's suggestion is worth implementing (if it does startup!). You can find MobileMeter here.

markitoxs,

I have a T20 and I've been experiening the same problems. I have stumbled across a workaround which is booting whilst connected to a docking station. Laptop seems to boot first time everytime, I can then just disconnect and use as normal.

Weird but true !

Hope this helps

Is it possible that the CPU is shutting down after a fresh start ? I mean i start my T21 and it shut's down or reboot's after a few second's. The problem is same as markitoxs described. Led's are blinking even a few time's per second.

Something Seems to be working

#10 Post by furiousmonkey » Thu Jan 18, 2007 6:57 pm

This is an interesting thing I noted, my t21 has the same poweron issues.

My power chord attachment over heated and died on me, lucky for me my Girlfriend has the 1300i series thinkpad and her power chord has the same voltage but the amps were increased a little, another thing to note about this power adapter was that it had a three prong plug in, so I attached it, and it worked, it charged my battery and even ran the laptop. The power on problem has stopped. And that is my story.

Anyone has any enlightenment on this please let me know.

It's not about the power chord, my problem happens even on the battery.
