Access Connections issue

#1 Post by kdavis » Thu Dec 14, 2006 10:02 am

Hello,

I'm running SUSE 10.1 and I have installed the access connections program provided by IBM. I've followed the instructions to a "T", but I'm still having trouble setting up a wireless profile.

In AC, I can view wireless networks and I see my access point listed with encryption enabled. (Its using standard WEP 128 encryption.) But when I choose my wireless network, I get this error message.

"Unable to connect to the selected wireless network. You may need to configure your system to support the authentication method that is in use. Contact your network administrator."

OK, so the instructions from IBM said to setup the network keeping the ESSID blank and no encryption assigned. I figured this would then prompt me for WEP keys if necessary? And the instructions say "the encryption can be set through Access Connections"...

===================================
[Instructions from IBM]
# Make sure the Network Name (ESSID) field is empty.
# Click Next.
# A popup message of "Using no encryption is a security risk. Really continue?" is displayed.
# Click Yes since the encryption can be set through Access Connections.
===================================

Now I've tried to setup a profile in Access Connections, but I do not have the ability to set up the wireless settings. If I try to edit any profiles, all the settings in the wireless tab are grayed out and inaccessible. Anyone experience the same problem or know what I might be doing wrong?

BTW, I previously used knetworkmanager and that works, just not consistently. In knetworkmanager, I choose an access point and if its encrypted, it prompts me for a passphrase or wep keys. Sometimes it asks 4 or 5 times, but it eventually does connect. I'm hoping to get Access Connections working more reliably, and I bet it would if I can get past this initial error message.

Thanks for any insight.
