T40 hard drive always on?

#1 Post by dorronto » Sat Dec 16, 2006 8:31 am

Just picked up a nice T40. Everything runs great, but the 40gb 5400rpm hard drive seems to be running all the time making a low "whooshing sound". This doesn't happen with my other T40. The palmrest gets warm , but not too warm(hot) to the touch and the hd temp is around 45 degrees C according to MoboMeter. Actually the hd temp is usually warmer than the Pent M 1.3.

Is there a switch of sorts that's on, that I should turn off?

Thanks,
Ron

Well, you can set and idle timer to spool down the drive. Although I would test things by getting NHC and then setting the parameters for the HDD acoustic management through it and see if it changes the drive's behavoir. :)

Can you explain further? How do you set and idle timer? Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks,
Ron

I'd recommend using the Disk Manufacturer HDD tool to customize accoustics. For Hitachi drives go to www.hitachigst.com

My 7200rpm HDD drive does not reach even 35C even though it's spinning always set to Max Performance.

SO...........I would have to assume that their are no other windows or firmware switches for me to look for?????????

BIOS or Hardware device? I just want to make sure.

Thanks,
Ron

Under Power Options, in the control panel, you can set the time it takes for the HDDs to "shut off" in the sense that they spool down after that period of inactivity whether you are on AC line power or power from the battery(ies). NHC does something similar, but has some other management options too which happen to reduce the power consumption of the HDD a little bit as well. :)

Thanks Chris. Powering down the hard drive, of course turns off the laptop, so that's not an option with me. I just noticed that my other T40 ALSO makes a slight , but audible "whooshing" noise that I never heard before. Maybe this is just part of the system mechanics, since devices have to be on. Possibly, I'm making a big deal out of nothing, but it doesn't hurt to ask the "pros" about it.

I'll keep searching further for an explanation.

Aprreciate the responses,
Ron
