Rescue & Recovery boot loop
Rescue & Recovery boot loop
Hi,
I am trying to go back to the factory settings of my T42 on an new HDD. I created a R&R Disk after I had bought the computer. I am using this disk now.
First, R&R rebooted about three times with an error message about a lack of virtual memory, then it finally installed on the HDD. After this it told me to remove the Disk and reboot. Since then I have been in a reboot loop for about an hour. R&R boots up, as soon as the black IBM screen appears, it reboots.
Do IBM programmers usually test their software before they sell it? Or is this software just a marketing gag?
Any suggestions how to get back to a virgin system?
Thank you
Simon

What you are saying doesn't quite make sense to me.
First, to clarify the terms used:
1) Product Recovery Disc set (or Recovery Discs) = ~ 7 CD's or 1 CD & 1 DVD > restores your computer to the original software state as it came from the factory.
2) Rescue Media CD = 1 CD for booting into the Rescue and Recovery workspace when your hard drive will not. Used for retrieving files off of a non-bootable hard drive to external media and used as a launching point for a restore process. Insufficient in itself to restore your hard drive. EDIT: your backup could be located on your hard drive.
3) Rescue and Recovery backup (or Rapid Restore Ultra backup) = several CD's or 1 or more DVD's (likely more than 1) > for restoring a backup made with the Rescue and Recovery or Rapid Restore Ultra program. Restores your computer to the state when the backup was made. Includes the software changes and additions you have made since you received your ThinkPad. EDIT: your backup could be located on your hard drive.
Which set of disks did you use?

Hi,
Thanks for your answer.
As far as I remember I didnt get product recovery disks with my laptop. I therefore created a rescue and recovery backup after purchase (your No. 3). I boot from this disk and choose to restore the backup. It copyies the files (takes several minutes), then tells me to remove the disk, and then I am in the loop.
Regards
Simon

They do not come with the laptop, but you can burn one set with a program that comes with the laptop. We try and tell new users to make this set first thing, before it's too late and things get mucked up with the customizing and all.RolloM wrote:As far as I remember I didnt get product recovery disks with my laptop.
