Possible to upgrade BIOS without floppy disks?

#1 Post by arif » Sat Dec 16, 2006 11:55 am

Hey,

I have a 600e. Without a floppy disk drive. Can I download the spsdih47.exe and burn it to a CD and run it from windows 98 in the thinkpad CD drive? or must I make it bootable somehow, and how?

I've got a usb flash disk, but Windows claims it needs a driver. I thought the whole point about a flash drive was that it was class compliant blah blah, didn't need drivers? Is this a sign with something not right in my OS? Only i dont want to have to burn a CD everytime just to transfer some files across!

Thank you

Are you using Windows 98SE? All USB drivers I have used require drivers for Win98SE, but usually not for Win2K or XP.

I don't know how to tell I'm afraid. I'm an absolute windows newbie (have more experience in the mac os and linux domain)

at the side of the start bar, it says Windows 98 (with no mention of SE) if that helps

It's most likely 98 Second Edition, because my understanding is that 98 First Edition doesn't even support USB ports. You can right-click on the "My Computer" icon and select "properties" to find out what operating system you have.

You need to go to the USB drive manufacturer's web site to download the appropriate driver for Win98SE.

I think I tried flashing the BIOS from a CD once but failed, so I will let others help you with that.

Actually 98 first edition does. I had a Pentium II with Win98FE with USB ports and I never has an issue. There were some versions of Windows 95 that supported (or lack there of) USB.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

I am surprised, because I read somewhere that a new feature of Win98SE was USB support. Anyway, all the USB devices (probably around 20 of them) that I have used require at least 98SE.
