T42p 14.1" 1400x1050 Display Issues After Service

#1 Post by bapatterson » Sat Dec 16, 2006 9:57 pm

I have a T42p with a 14.1" 1400x1050 display (2373-KTU). A month ago, the bottom left-hand corner of the display was showing a distinct pinkish tinge when first starting up. I did some research and learned that it is indicative of a failing inverter or LCD screen.

I have a three-year warranty on the ThinkPad so I called. They shipped the empty box to me, I sent the computer back, and it was returned two days later with a note saying the screen had been replaced. So far so good.

I now note, however, that the screen has a marked "soft focus" look to it (the old one didn't) and the brightness is significantly less than my X40 when they are side-by-side and both at full brightness and hooked up to AC power.

Any ideas on what is going on? Looks like I'll have to ship it back to have it "fixed" again.

Try the following settings. In Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > under Multimedia, uncheck box: Always use Clear Type for HTML*

Is this for the *whole* system and OS, bapatterson?

It is for the whole system--not just IE.

The brightness is quite markedly dimmer than my X40 and it is like there is a fine mesh over the screen (think old Hollywood movies where they filmed aging actresses with mesh over the lighting).

I don't recall this from my old screen and it certainly doesn't exist on my X40.

Yes, the screen is clean and the settings are as they were before.

It states under my user name that my e-mail is a bad address, but I just checked my profile and that is a valid e-mail address for me.

Hmm, I was thinking there might have been a software issue/setting that the depot might have fiddled with to test the screen, but apparently not. The meshing you are describing isn't something that can be visible unless there is a significant anomaly with the hardware on the new screen. Have you talked to the rep or the service depot about it yet? They might have some notes if they can identify the case/ticket number for it with the customer.

Oh, and I'll check your email address too a bit later. :)

I guess the best way to describe it is that it looks like there is a very fine etching evenly over the entire screen that gives it a bit of a soft focus look.

I haven't called IBM back, but I will tomorrow morning.

I wanted to check on the forum first to see if IBM had changed the nature of the screen since the delivery of the computer when it was new.

Hmmm, nope...Above the level of the pixels, that shouldn't happen and there shouldn't be a "soft focus" look to it. Especially if it persists through the BIOS splash screen all the way to the desktop.
