** Seagate Founder Al Shugart Passes Away **

#1 Post by BillMorrow » Sun Dec 17, 2006 3:32 am

A remarkable event..

Yet another Pioneer of the Personal Computer strolls off into the sunset over the Pacific.

My very first floppy diskette drive was a Shugart 5.25 inch floppy Diskette drive, sold (for about $750!) by the founders of Kentucky Fried Computers, as a NorthStar Diskette Drive Controller which came bundled with NorthStar DOS and Basic.. Which I used on my IMSAI 8080 (into which i later installed a Morrow Designs (not me) ThinkerToys Motherboard (really nothing more than a noise free backplane)..

The next time I recall reading about Al Shugart (i THINK it was he and not Nolan Bushnell (think Atari)) he had "hit" a bicycalist with the outside rearview mirror while driving his Rolls Royce home one afternoon in Saratoga, CA.

Disk Drive Pioneer Al Shugart Dies at age 76

The Associated Press
Dec 13, 2006 1:39 PM (3 days ago)

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Alan Shugart, the co-founder of hard drive maker Seagate Technology LLC, has died, the company said Wednesday. He was 76.

Shugart helped pioneer the multibillion dollar hard drive industry, in which Seagate now holds the leading market position. He founded the company in 1979 and left in 1998.

Described by some as a maverick, Shugart was well known for his colorful personality that included an effort to get his dog to run for Congress. The unsuccessful ploy became the topic of one of his three books, "Ernest Goes to Washington (Well, Not Exactly)."

Shugart died Tuesday at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, said Seagate spokeswoman Julie Stills. He was admitted last week and died of complications from heart surgery he underwent six weeks ago.

He was still working until the day of his death, checking e-mails for his company, Al Shugart International, a startup incubator based in Santa Cruz, Stills said.

He is survived by his wife, Rita, four daughters, a son, and seven grandchildren.

Statement from Bill Watkins, Seagate CEO

“The entire Seagate family around the world is deeply saddened by the loss of Al Shugart, who passed away Dec. 12 from complications following heart surgery.

For those who had the rare and wonderful opportunity of knowing him, it’s hard to imagine our world without Al Shugart in it to challenge the status quo, say things that were outrageously honest and achieve the remarkable.

It is impossible to summarize the profound impact of Al’s work during his 50-year career, most notably of course as a pioneer in the storage industry and Seagate’s founder. It was Al’s vision and entrepreneurial spirit that turned an emerging technology built with Dixie cups and panty hose into a universally embraced product that touches so many people around the globe. Al not only built Seagate, but in many ways he created an entire industry.

One small Seagate building in Scotts Valley grew to many, and then operations were launched around the world employing many thousands of people. Subsequently, as an industry grew around us, thousands of more jobs were created. Hard drives continued to become more sophisticated and integral to our world, enabling applications and markets that few could have imagined at the outset – even Al admitted that when the first Seagate product was launched he couldn’t imagine anyone ever needing more than 5 Megabytes of storage. It’s really impossible to look at modern business, society, communications, science, music, entertainment or anything else without seeing the power and impact of Al’s legacy.

Al’s unique spirit made him a remarkable entrepreneur. And it also made him an unforgettable human being. Stories about Al and the many ways he touched people still circulate around the industry. Most will remember him as a man who loved to enjoy life, and encouraged everyone he touched to do the same.”

Not To disrespect Alan Shugart, would it be not funny if this turns out to be one of his jokes, just to find out what people say about him after he passes. just a thought and not to be insensitive.

but I think all of us do wonder, when we pass how will other be feeling, rejoice, sad.

Shugart always was one for eccentric stylings, that's for sure. :)

YES, a sticky until I decide different.. :)
it IS my forum and until i sell it or lock the doors or follow shugart into that sunset, it will be a sticky..

fora are here to educate and help and this forum is SUPPOSED to be a community of thinkpad owners..

the story behind that black box called a thinkpad is as diverse as the tree of life..
so many tiny parts all coming together to work flawlessly..
(usually :) )
its only when you know what goes on inside that box that I for one am constantly amazed that these things work at all..
as a friend, gerry baugus, once said about a hard drive, its nearly black magic and he was talking about what we called a winchester technology drive about 20 years ago.. and now we talk about quantum physics where things like light and gravity USUALLY work the same way all the time but can NOT work that way anytime..

when someone like al shugart dies (or gordon french, lee felsenstein or jim warren or george morrow(who might have died already)) passes into history I WILL take note and try to inform others..
and if my life brushed past any of those luminaries i will comment on it..
hopefully, some of their brilliance might have rubbed off..

you all live in a world of windows and linux and do not even know when something like li-chen wangs tiny basic was free and wonderful.. when homebrew was THE original forum.. when a BBS was just that, an electronic bulliten board and limited to local members on a dialup telephone 300 baud modem..

gawd, if it were not for the guys who innovated and still do so we all would be in the dark ages..

"Bernard of Chartres used to say that we are like dwarfs on the shoulders of giants, so that we can see more than they, and things at a greater distance, not by virtue of any sharpness of sight on our part, or any mental or physical distinction, but because we are carried high and raised up by their giant size."

SO TRUE! I have been saying the same thing for years!!

Even the HD's, there is a TON of engineering (and I am sure a bit of luck) in them! I have a deep respect for the quality HD's that Seagate produces, let's hope that they respect him by continuing to follow his legacy of manufacturing a quality product!! while still being competitive in the market place. I remember the days when the profit margins were HUGE!! Everyone from the OEM to the supplier made MAD $$, one perfect example is the Floppy drive statement above...$750 and a LOT of that was $$$ in the oem's or resellers pocket...now you can find a "quality" USB floppy drive for under $20 while interest rates, cost of living, etc, etc have gone UP; the cost and profit margins on this stuff has gone WAY down!!

Compared with other industries, the Computer is "young" and as sad and unfortunate as it might seem, we are going to see many more pioneers of the industry "punching out".....May he rest in peace......

Cheers to Mr. Shugart. I've got a Seagate drive (Barracuda 7200.9) in my desktop box, and its a quiet and fast device.
