Old hardrive used as a external storage.

#1 Post by cmarti » Mon Dec 18, 2006 6:22 pm

I know this is suposed to be easy but i cannot make it work.

I replace the hardrive of my X60 with a 7K100 100GB and now i have a 80GB toshiba drive without any use for it, i got a external usb case and i tried to format the old drive with windows and also with a Xp pro cd booting from it. It is installed but windows cannot see it.

I rule out the case using another adapter and i am having the same results with the second one.

It was working ok in the X60, what is the reason it not being recognized by XP? Maybe the hidden partition?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Carlos.

Did you have a password on the drive? That will mess things up when using it in a USB enclosure.
Maybe put it back in the X60 and unhide the hidden partition in the bios then clear any passwords.

If it is not a password problem. Then try the following. Delete all partitions on the disk, then create a primary partition on it and format it. See if Windows will see it then.

I am not that familiar with the X60 model, but I believe you have a SATA 80GB Toshiba drive. Did you get a SATA external USB enclosure or a PATA external USB enclosure?

If you have the media slice so you can use a cdrom, get a drive drawer and use it in that, faster than a usb enclosure

Okay, this has got to work. Put it in the X60. Boot from a Win98 CD or floppy. FDISK. FORMAT. Take it out and put it in the USB enclosure. Done.

One quick question for the OP:

Carlos, have you tried that USB enclosure (for SATA I presume) with another drive to make sure it is not a problem with the enclosure?

Another thought would be clearing the refreshing the MBR or marking the new partition as active?

Same that the newly inserted drive still does not work? If so, maybe the enclosure has a problem, you can try using a different enclosure?

If you've a floppy drive, boot from a win98 floppy diskette and run this command:

A:\> FDISK /MBR

So can you see the drive at all under Computer Management, in Storage > Disk Management? If so, what partitions do you see on it?

No partitions can be seen in the disk management.

I haven't found the win 98 cd, a friend will bring me one tomorrow so can try the suggestions others members provided. :)

Does it have/need a jumper for the drive to operate properly?

Maybe it's a driver problem. You might go to Windows Update, choose Custom, and see if it finds any drivers.

Another thought. Is the external hard drive enclosure powered? Maybe you need to supply external power aside from what you can get via the USB port.

Something I posted early on in this thread, I don't see that you ever did it. Delete all partitions on the drive, then create a new primary partition and format it. See if Windows will see it then.

You can delete and create partitions with fdisk. I believe fdisk is included on a Windows 98 startup floppy. Another way is to boot a Windows install CD and choose to delete all partitions, then create a partition. Remove the CD and reboot. Hopefully Windows will now see the partition, which you can then format. With either of these methods, be sure you are partitioning and formatting the correct hard drive or you will be in for a nasty surprise.

I use yesterday a win 98 floppy to delete the partition and formating it but no luck the partitions cannot be seen.

Sorry Cmarti, I am out of ideas. The only things I can think of that would cause your problem at this point is a bad USB hard drive enclosure, or a driver problem - either USB, Intel Matrix Storage Manager, or something similar.

That brings up one other idea. If you have Intel Matrix Storage Manager installed, open that in Windows and see if it sees the drive. It's possible you will need the full version from Intel if the version on the X60 does not have the Intel program to open from All Programs.

Select Appropriate Version of Intel® Application Accelerator
