My wireless radio won't turn on. Z61t with Atheros card

#1 Post by intelliot » Tue Dec 19, 2006 12:54 am

Hey,

The wireless radio on my ThinkPad Z61t won't turn on. When I click "Find WLAN...", it says "The wireless radio is powered off. Do you want to power it on?"

When I select "Yes", it brings up the window which says "No networks found." My connection status still says "Radio off". The wireless switch is in the "On" position, and when I press Fn+F5, it says the 802.11 Wireless Radio is Off.

When I click the "Power On" button, nothing happens. The button graphic depresses, so it receives the click, but the radio remains off. Its status doesn't change.

The system doesn't find any networks and can't connect to anything with the radio (because it's off).

The last thing I did was run the "Network Setup Wizard" and choose to share my wireless connection over Ethernet. That seems to have screwed things up. Running the Wizard again with my original settings again doesn't fix it.

Any ideas?

I was about to restore to Factory Settings when I tried letting Windows manage my wireless connections, instead of the ThinkPad software. Now it works!

It's still annoying that the ThinkPad software doesn't work anymore. Also, I've noticed that the time it takes for the computer to read the security chip during bootup is much longer. It used to take a few seconds, but now it takes about a minute! Any ideas?

I had the same problem with a Z60m last night after i updated the driver using software installer. If you either uninstall the driver or just reinstall it(it will auto remove the old one) it goes back to working normally. Cant help on the security chip im afraid.

Thanks!! It works. I had to update the wireless software by going to ThinkVantage -> Update my system.
