What do I need for WIFI on my ThinkPad T23 ??
Hello,
I have an IBM ThinkPad T23. Currently I have NetZero 3X dial-up internet access. I'm running Windows XP Pro. I'd like to go WIFI. I have a Linksys 2.4ghz 802.11b Wireless-B Lan adapter installed.
What else do I need to go WIFI ??
Thanks, Guy's!

hello bruce,
you need a wireless router wich has dial-up capabilities, i think that property is called PPPoE or something like that.
most cheap routers will do the job, i have a MSI router wich is really cheap and i have 3 PC's that are using it constantly, i do a lot of traffic over wireless and LAN and the router never froze on me or give me any errors to make it unusable.
the router is this one:

Go to BestBuy, Staples or CompUSA in Sacramento, check the wireless routers. Get the one on special sale. Better if it is Linksys, Netgear, but no biggie if it is not.2901bruce wrote:Hello,

After that, some configuration awaits. Most of the routers these days have wizards, and you just have to follow through either within the router's own interface or a web browser interface, type in a few settings like network name (called SSID) and encryption (highly recommended esp. if you're living in a big apartment with neighbours), and establish connection. From then on, the router will take care of establishing connection to NetZero, so you won't have to do it, and you will have internet access once the router authenticates.
There are some downshots to this, one being the router has to be capable of establishing and terminating dial-up connections on demand. Make sure you ask this and tell the salesperson you're on dial-up.
Most people including me will suggest you go broadband (ie. high speed internet) to really benefit from and love wireless connectivity at home/office.

Thanks. I'll take your advice. How about traveling & using free WIFI "Hot spots" (Starbucks, etc;). I don't need an internet connection/computer/router at home for this, correct? What software/hardware do I need in my T23? Thanks......... 2901bruce.Musti wrote:Go to BestBuy, Staples or CompUSA in Sacramento, check the wireless routers. Get the one on special sale. The only thing you require is the WiFi card itself and the correct drivers for it. If you have bought the card new, it should come with a CD that has all of the appropriate drivers and/or utility programs to install and configure it. It you got it used, visit the Linksys web site and search for your particular model.2901bruce wrote:How about traveling & using free WIFI "Hot spots" (Starbucks, etc;). Assuming the card is installed properly then all you need to do to access the free hot spots is to add a "profile" to the connection setup. Typically this is done with a custom program from the card manufacturer or you can allow Windows to do this. This "profile" basically consists of the wireless access point "name" (called SSID), whether encryption is enabled or not, the password/key if encryption is enabled and if you are connecting to an "ad hoc" network or "infrastructure". In that case, you want "infrastructure". There are many articles online which help you with wireless networking but the best thing to do is search through the Linksys site and follow their instructions.

Yes, I shouldn't add anything more to Ray's instructions...however there's one little thing...
Look around in Starbucks for the gender that interests you, shortlist the single candidates with laptops, and ask them how they managed to connect, what passkey they used, etc. Then return the favour with a latte.
Thank us later.

Not that it works all the time. But you'll never ever win the lottery if you don't buy the ticket

Before you invest any money, I would check your area for free wifi access point. Many cities and local institutions have free wifi.2901bruce wrote:Hello, I have an IBM ThinkPad T23. Soon, I will be dropping my $50-some dollar Comcast broadband cable as the county next to me is going county wide wifi. I live 50 feet from the county line, so I will be able to get free wifi broadband from the County next door. If you live near a courthouse or large fire or police station, you maybe able to use their wifi network. Download a free copy of network stumbler to search for wifi access points within range of you. If you find a weak signal, you can enhance it with a signal transmitter unit or a war diving wifi card (use antennas)
