Anyone using the UltraBay 2000 ZIP drive? Suggestions?

#1 Post by AlphaGJohn » Tue Sep 07, 2004 11:08 am

I'm trying to figure out if the ZIP drive I bought on eBay has a problem or if I just don't have the right software/settings. I notice when you buy it from IBM, it comes with a CD--I got the drive and that's it. The Iomega site has rather minimal info on it, but I got the recommended latest and greatest IomegaWare download from iomega.com, but it does absolutely nothing other than put an icon in the Control Panel as far as I can tell. I'm not even sure it's installing correctly.

So, there's no drivers for the ZIP drive apparently, and the IBM instructions I found for troubleshooting it want you to be sure the BIOS is set to use a floppy drive in the bay--made that change and no help.

The ZIP drive spins for a moment during boot-up so I don't think the motor's dead but when Windows finally boots up, it hasn't recognized the drive. If I take it out and put the CD drive in, Windows sees the CD drive w/o difficulty so the bay itself doesn't seem like it can be bad. No good way to test the ZIP drive (I don't have a buddy with a working one I can try).

The laptop is an R31 w/ Win XP Pro.

Any suggestions welcomed!

IIRC, My Computer> Properties> Hardware> Device Manager> IDE Controller> click the box for "Enable legacy devices".

No such setting...

Thanks, James!

That sure sounded good, but there isn't any such option on anything in the Device Manager related to the IDE Controller or the Floppy Controller.

Here's the options on the Advanced Settings tab of the IDE Controller channels Properties dialog:

(These are both combo boxes with the options as shown)

Device Type:
Auto Detection
None

Transfer Mode:
DMA if available
PIO only

I haven't tried all the combinations of settings there, but so far no luck.

I did notice that there is an entry in the Device Manager tree for Floppy Disk Controller and that was disabled; but enabling it didn't help either. (I keep thinking I must have found the key and then it doesn't do anything...) The Floppy Disk Controller entry has no adjustable settings in it's Properties dialog.

So far, no luck getting the drive to be recognized by Windoze... Thanks for the suggestion--anyone else?
