I've noticed quite a few people having problems when updating Windows XP to Service Pack Level 2.
Here are the steps I took to install Windows XP Service Pack 2 and hope this can help:
1) Download latest IBM Access Connections for Windows 2000/XP.
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... us&lang=en
2) Download latest Wireless Driver (In my case, LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter)
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... &loc=en_US
3) Install Wireless Driver First.
4) Install IBM Access Connections for Windows 2000/XP.
5) Download and Install Windows XP Service Pack 2.
(Optional)
6) Download BIOS Update (Non-Diskette) - ThinkPad R50/p, R51 (1829, 1830, 1831, 1836), T40/p, T41/p, T42/p
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... us&lang=en
7) Download Embedded Controller Program (Non-Diskette) ThinkPad R50/p, R51 (1829, 1830, 1831, 1836), T40/p, T41/p, T42/p
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.ws ... &loc=en_US
9) Update System Program (BIOS) by double clicking the downloaded BIOS program in Windows XP. (The machine will reboot 1st. After following the on-screen instructions and update your BIOS, the machine will be shutdown automatically. Simply Turn on the machine again and continue the next step.)
10) Press `Access IBM` when the BIOS logo shows up and check the latest BIOS version should be 1RETD4WW (3.08a) and the latest embedded controller program should be 3.03 (1RHT70WW). Check the BIOS settings on the new features shown in the BIOS such as `enable/disable Wireless Network`.
Windows XP Service Pack 2 works pretty well on my Thinkpad T41 (2379DJU). Hope this would help.
