I searched thru all T2 posts and still can't find solutions

#1 Post by rikkisix » Thu Dec 21, 2006 3:47 pm

Hi,
I really, really appreciate all the help but if everybody could answer my questions as if I knew absolutley nothing about computers that would help even more! I understand some of it but I get lost really quickly then my teeny, tiny brain shuts down, my eyes go vacant and I get a chonic facial tic. Not a pretty sight.

Ok,so besides being a rookie at all of this; I still have a few bugs in my T22. I looked thru an awful lot of posts and I'm still stumped(see above).

Here goes:
1) My Scandisk shuts down and says that it tried 10 times to restart.
2) My standby/hybernation doesn't want to work.
3) Its been taking longer and longer for my T22 to shut down and sometimes it doesn't shut down at all.
4) My Ultrabay drive does not often get recognized when I put ANY disk in and I end up opening and shutting it several times before it wants to start. Although, it does't happen as much since I got the new CDRW DVD combo drive.
I think that's it so far. Except I should add that I have a ThinkPad T22 2647-4EU OS is Windows 98SE and my ultrabay drive is a CDRW DVD combo drive.

Again, I do hope my cluelessness is taken into consideration and that everyone will be kind.
(I'm also very dissapointed that this forum doesn't have a spell check! I used to spell so well! What happened??????????????)

These problems sound like a combination of software and hardware conditions. My initial questions would be:

1. How long have you had this machine?
2. Has any kind of maintenance been done on it and/or has the OS ever been reinstalled?
3. How much RAM does it have (if you don't know, right-click on My Computer and then click on Properties and it should display the amount)?

Oh and by the way, try out Spellcheck.net, I use it all the time!

Hi David,

I bought the machine a year and a half ago factory reconditioned.
I don't know if the OS was reinstalled or not and if it was ever "fixed". It has 128.0mb RAM and that's about all I know right now.
Does the Device Manager have everything that's listed on my T22 or does it just give you options?

Hey, thanks for the Spellcheck info!

Okay, #1-#3 pretty much sound like something going wrong with the OS. Unless you're really attached to 98 (such as you have some apps/games that only run in it), I would first suggest upgrading. 98 is not the most stable OS, and that machine will run 2000 extremely well, and with some more RAM could do the same with XP.

Otherwise, reinstalling 98 should help in lieu of moving to 2k/XP. If you have the 98 install CD available, your biggest problem will be backing up your files/etc. before hand. If you don't have the 98 install CD...you might be better off just going the 2k/XP upgrade route.

As for #4, I'm slightly confused....did you originally have just a CD-ROM and now have a Combo, and the problem has happened on both?

Oh and uh, my name's not David...that's just the person who wrote the quote in my sig. :D

Sorry about the name! Silly me! Proof of my Probie Status!

Is it ok if I call you Hollywood?

Even though I'm only 20 minutes away from Times Square, you can call me Jersey if you want to!

Anyway,I have thought about changing my OS. Am seriously looking into it. Don't want to reinstall 98. Did that once and screwed up my PC pretty well. Which is why I now have a laptop.

My T22 came with just a DVD player/drive that played music and read data but I couldn't burn CD's or record data on it. So, I got a CDRW/DVD combo but don't have the software for it to run yet. Working/doing research on that as well.

I hate not knowing how to work things! It's like knowing how to drive but not being able to fix your car by yourself. This is why I don't have a car anymore but I have to have a computer for my work. What's a person to do? :banghead:

Rikki, I suggest you hang with this board daily, the knowledge and help available put IBM to shame. In no time you will know a lot more than you do today, I guarantee it. Welcome and hang in there. I love my T22 and by the way somewhere along the line some nice person upgraded the RAM and installed XP Prof.

Hibernation/Standby is usually started by clicking the button (Enable Hibernation) in the Battery Management (may be Power Options in Control Panel)

If this is not present, you can get it from the IBM/Lenovo site.

hello

like to add had a similar problem turned out to be the micro switch on the cd drive bay , try using without the optical drive see if it runs better ,
also as mentioned more ram would really help a lot , i have to say i am a real fan of win98 and it only needs a decent memory manager which can be found around internet then loaded over microsofts one ,you can use a max of 512mb ram via 2x256mb so look for a 256mb stick to add should be cheap check here to make sure its suitable.

good luck ianf
ps do you have internet on t22 ?
