Does the 90W AC adapter charge the laptop faster?

I've noticed that the AC adapter included with my Z61t is 65W, but the ones sold on Lenovo's website and recommended for use with the port replicator/docks are 90W.

I read in another thread here (not in the Z series forum) that the 90W adapter doesn't charge the battery any faster. If that's the case, why do they even make 90W adapters? Apparently, they're bigger and usually more expensive. Is there any advantage to getting a 90W adapter? If I want a 2nd AC adapter, should I get a 90W? How about f I want to use it with a port replicator?

One reason why Lenovo may build and recommend the 90W adapter for use with the port replicator or docking station is for the extra hardware that could be attached. Without checking the system specs of your Z61t, I would assume that it draws less than the 65W that your AC adapter provides. Running the laptop with a 90W supply will do no harm (other than lightening your wallet vs. a 65W). The 90W supply will probably run cooler than the 65W and you are right in saying that it won't charge your battery any faster.

Doesn't charge any faster. If you check the battery properties applet while running on batteries, you will see that the charge rate is far below the power brick's rating.

As rkawakami said, the big power supplies are designed to accommodate extra accessories.

I don't know. One theory: they shipped 90W adapters with Z60t's, but 65W adapters with Z61t's.

That could be true if, and only if, the supplied adapter was underpowered. That is unlikely for IBM. Ohm's Law says you cannot push current, only pull it. ... JD Hurst

Don't know why you have 65W.
But I can Say it will be safe to use with your Z61t.

I use the V100 Power Adaptor 65W at work for more
than half year. The Computer know it's a 65W &
showed at IBM's PM. The 65W is lighter & smaller.

I am thinking to get one for easy carry.........
