Reccomend a good FTP client (free too)

I am going to be working on a site pretty heavily the next few weeks, and I haven't until now really needed a good separate FTP client....any suggestions?

Which is more important? Free or good? WS_FTP is as good as I have seen, Windows or Linux. ... JDHurst

I'll second WS_FTP. It is the best one to use in windows.
It looks like the new version is only a 30 day trial.
I can send you the old one (646k) if you want, it is free forever.

Well, free is always good, and I think for the level I use ftp I don't think I can justify spending a significant amount of money when there are free alternatives.

WS_FTP was great, I used to use it a few years ago - but the version that they have for download now is a piece of crap. Too much eye candy and functionality has gone down the drain. I thought oldversion.com had an old version of WS_FTP but I guess not...can you send me that copy you have, carbon_unit? Thanks a lot man. (PM sent)

Also, I have been reading a lot about "Filezilla", a free open-source FTP client that has a lot of good reccomendations on hardforums.com and other places....anyone here used it?

NOT free, but bullet proof FTP was the best I have ever used as of a few years ago. There may be better clients out now - I haven't used them in a while.

It may be worth it, as I remember it was head and shoulders above anything else

I use Smartftp. Had some problems with ws-ftp and xp2. Free for personal use/educational/non-profit use.

leech ftp is a good one but doesnt handle new tech as SSH and so on. IMO filezilla is the best FTP freeware for now

Yes, I have used FileZilla and I love it. I used WS_FTP before and I have no complain against it, except for not being free. FileZilla also comes with an FTP server (separate download,) which I also use from time to time.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I tried Filezilla and I haven't had the desire to try anything else!! It does what I want and more, and all with about the cleanest interface I've seen. Best thing is it's freeware and open-source, so there's a solid user base out there for support and future improvements.
