Pictures and small review of T60.

I received my T60 today. As I posted elsewhere, I ordered it with 1 GB of RAM but it only came in with 512 MB. I already contacted tech support for that; I will update when this issue is resolved.

The box seemed both smaller and lighter than I was expecting. When I took the lappy out, it was immediately apparent that this was no Dell (like my old machine).

The set-up was almost a breeze, as I had perused through this forum before I even turned on the machine, and I have set up more than my share of computers (I am not a geek nor a techie, just a guy who likes good gadgets).
Nonetheless, there were a couple of things during the security chip set-up that threw me off, like the disksafe partition and the power-on fingerprint configuration. I opted not to create a disksafe partition, since I can always do it later; the same for the fingerprint reader.

The fingerprint setup has "issues", since after the second or third restart, it asked me for BOTH a fingerprint and the passphrase. I will try to figure out how to configure it so that it's not redundant.

Overall, in the few hours that I have used it (less than 24 hrs.), I have been more than satisfied with it. Everything works, the computer has not hung up, and XP Pro seems pretty competent.

Well, sorry about the dog, but that's how I felt waiting for the machine (like a dog waiting for a treat), that's why I included pictures of my Airedale.

So far things are ok. I need to get used to the better keyboard, as I am used to the Dell!!

Anyhow, I hope you enjoy the pictures, even though they are not exactly great.

Have you enabled the single sing-on in the fingerprint-program?

Hi

You have to go into bios, use a finger and the password und than the the finger is saved, it is writen in the bios setup.

I have really not delved into the fingerprint or security chip part yet, as I spent yesterday setting up the T60, copying files, etc.

My wife is inheriting my old Dell, so I need to work setting up the Dell machine for her. Even though she wants it to be "her computer only", I plan on keeping myself as an administrator, just in case anything happens (I know this seems sexist, but trust me, I am very far from a sexist person. Besides, my wife is no exactly a computer whiz).

Where are you in Deutschland (in general)? I was there this past summer, for the World Cup. I actually went to several towns that did NOT host the cup, since I have many German friends. I mostly spent time with a German friend who teaches (fluid dynamics) at the technical university in Karlsruhe. I had loads of fun. It was my first time in Germany, and I want to go back without the World Cup as a backdrop.

In any event, I will read up on the password and fingerprint issues. I hope that people give me some input; I will post updates.

You will have no problems you can't tolerate, because anyone who owns an airedale terrier has already developed lots of patience and toleration

My female Airedale, now almost 10, behaves almost exactly as she did at 3. She's very sweet, very high strung, and almost untrainable.

I know! Mine is 6 and behaves like he is 18 months old.

I am sorry for the delayed answer to the questions. I was with my family, so I was away from my tp.

I still have a Dell 600m, which my wife will inherit.

As far as the screen, I like it. It was a little straining to read text at first, since the Dell only has an XGA screen. But I got used to it pretty quickly, and as a matter of fact I know prefer it over the Dell's.
This brings me to a question, does anyone know of a good screen protector for the T60? What do you think about protectors? I have one on the old machine that I bought from Dell, and it seems to do its job well enough.

I still have not found a way to configure the T60 so that it only asks for the fingerprint and not both the fp and the passphrase. Does anyone have a solution for this?

Also, I have a windows user password and a css passphrase. However, I don't have a hardware password (for the hdd, the power-on, and the administrator or supervisor), so the Security Advisor keeps on telling me that I should do this. Do you think this is a good idea, isn't that a little overkill?
