USB Mouse not working

Just got my new T60p. Set it up and I like it! But, neither of my USB mice will work. Microsoft or Logitech. It's like the USB driver for the receiver is not available or installed. The CD that came with the mice does not seem to have what I need (or I can't find it on them). On my R51e all I had to do was plug the darn things in and they worked. Any ideas?

I just plugged in a Microsoft optical mouse for the first time and it installed automatically and works fine.
Have you tried other usb devices such as a flash drive to see if the usb ports are working at all? Have you tried all three usb ports. Do you get any response or message when you plug in the device? Have you checked Device manager for any unrecognized devices when the mouse is plugged in? If an optical mouse does it light up when plugged in? Do you see an entry in device manager that say's "Universal Serial Bus controllers"?

Awesome quick response!

When I plug in the dongle, a balloon appears "Found new hardware USB receiver". When I try to install the software with the found new hardware wizard, it can't find a driver and fails.

Both mice work in my R51e

Have tried all three USB ports, same thing.

Tried a USB camera that works just fine. It popped up the balloon "Found new hardware "
Canon Digital Camera". Then it goes to the "Found New Harware" Wizard but fails to install any software.

Seems like the USB ports need a driver...

Sounds like an incomplete Windows install. Have you run all the updates, both Thinkpad and Microsoft? Is your login account an administrator? When the installation looks for a driver is the t60 connected to the network? Are you allowing it to look on the internet(also known as windows update) for a driver?

I did all the Windows updates. I did not do any of the Lenovo updates since there were no "critical" or "recommended" updates when the Thinkvantage System Update returned the list.

Login has admin rights

Am connected to the internet and have allowed the new hardware wizard to connect to the web for drivers.

In the device manager, under USB, I have:
Intel 82801G USB host controller - 27C8
Intel 82801G USB host controller - 27C9
Intel 82801G USB host controller - 27CA
Intel 82801G USB host controller - 27CB
Intel 82801G USB host controller - 27CC
and (5) USB Root Hubs

T60p delivered 22 Dec 2006
Duo-Core 2Ghz T7200
2 Gig RAM
60 Gig 7200 RPM drive
ATI 5250 video / 512 MB
DVD burner
15" flexscreen
a/b/g Wireless, fingerprint

In device manager try updating the driver under "mice and other pointing devices" for the mouse you are installing. If that doesn't work try uninstalling it in device manager and then "scan for hardware changes" under the "action" pull down menu and try to let it install the driver again. If that doesn't work you might want to consider calling lenovo support or reinstalling windows.
Others on this forum might also have suggestions but it's holiday time so responses might be slow in coming.

Ack. I installed 4 of the Lenovo updates, and now the wireless stopped working. USB still does not work. Half of the items in the ThinkVantage bar that come up from pushing the ThinkVantage button do not work. I did Thinkpad Configuration, Wireless LAN Adapter, BIOS update and Power management driver.

Bummer indeed!

Bummer most indeed. Hopefully you created R&R cd's. If not create them now. In your situation I would probably bite the bullet and reinstall the OS.

Actually, I think you should run pc doctor first just to be sure it's not hardware like bad memory or harddrive.

Reinstall from what? The laptop did not come with any CDs or other media.

Duh. I found the Rescue and Recovery instructions. Last resort, though...

I deleted the wireless from the system, rebooted, used the system update to re-load wireless software and it seems to work partially. Windows can now make the wireless work (whereas before it could not), but the IBM software can not turn the radio on or work with the wireless card at all (whereas before it could).

Rats!

Could my problem be the software I loaded? OpenOffice, MS Office2003, Quicken2007, MathCad13, AutoCAD2006, SpySweeper, RegistryFirstAid, ExpensAble7, FireFox2, MS Project2003, Acrobat6 (full version)?

Well, I started from scratch (using boot the recovery option) and now it all works. I loaded all my software again and it still works. Got my fingers crossed.

A bit of post-mortem here. Reading the original post, those are not regular mice. Those are wireless mice and the problem was not the mouse but the wireless receiver. The drivers for such receivers are not part of a normal Windows XP install. This may very well be the classic case of plugging in a USB device that requires a special driver *before* the driver is installed.

When that occurs, the solution is not to do a full R&R, but to go into device manager (and in extreme cases in the registry, but in that case it is better to use a utility provided by the vendor's tech support) and to remove the detected device, then reboot, do a proper install of the driver according to the vendor's instructions, and only then plug in the USB device.

Generally even with the wireless mice, you just plug them in and they start working without having installed anything. Mine did.

It's probably for the best that he cleaned his system and started on a clean slate with the strange problems he had.

Well, I appreciate the advice. On older systems, I agree that special drivers are often needed, but not on a new XP Pro system. Since my clean and re-install from the hidden partition, everything has been great. Well....almost everything. The USB mouse was plugged in when I did the reinstall and it worked first time everytime. BUT ONLY IN THE ORIGINAL USB SLOT!! If I put it in the other two, it give me that "Found new hardware" goofy message, then fails to find or install any drivers. the device fails to work and I have to use the original USB port (top right). I just tried plugging a Canon digital camera into the USB slots. It "Found new hardware" but could not install drivers and failed on all three ports. This is really goofy beavior. I was able to plug mice and cameras into the USB ports on my desktops and my R51e and they all installed drivers right away. It's like Windows can not find the windows CAB file... getting very frustrated. I'm sure it would happen with any device. The only device that works is the mouse that was plugged in when the reinstall was done.

Sad news. I called Lenovo. They had me uninstall the USB devices in the control panel. Unfortunately, they never came back! The USB controllers (all 5) came back but not any of the USB hubs. Now my USB ports are quite dead. They say I have to do a complete restore and DON'T plug anything into the USB ports as it does the restore. So here I am, backing up on nearly New Year's Eve. I hope next year will be better!

Well it's t+5 hours and I'm back in the saddle again. It all works just fine. All 3 usb ports work interchangeably. Whew!

This really is a pain in the a**.
I have had the same problem as david had...twice!
What is it that makes the drivers suddenly dissappear and why is it necessary whit a clean install?!!?
