Battery Meter Problem (switch from 9 cell to 6 cell)

#1 Post by PanEuropean » Tue Dec 26, 2006 11:14 pm

Hello:

I recently replaced the 9 cell battery that came as OEM equipment on my T42p 2373-HTG with a 6 cell battery. I don't need the endurance that the 9 cell provides and am grateful for the smaller footprint of the 6 cell.

Problem is - the battery meter still thinks there is a 9 cell battery attached. The percentage of capacity remaining falls off gradually until it reaches 40% remaining, at which point the laptop powers off because the battery is empty.

Does anyone know if it is necessary to delete a file or registry key somewhere to cause the battery management software to re-examine what kind of battery is attached to the laptop?

The behavior you are experiencing does not necessarily mean that the T42p thinks the 9 cell is still in use. You should have a green battery icon in the notification area at the lower right. It will display percentage remaining. Left-click on icon and choose Battery information > Information tab. There you will see the manufacturer of the battery and the original design capacity. A 6 cell battery will be around 50 Wh. Not sure about the 9 cell. Go back to Status, and click on Battery Health. Choose Improve Battery Health to reset the gauge so that it will more accurately display the percentage and time remaining.

If you do not see the green battery icon, go to Start > All Programs > Access IBM > Battery MaxiMiser Wizard and follow the prompts. Be sure and check box on Step 3 to Show Battery MaxiMiser Gauge on Taskbar. This will put the green icon there for you.

Thank you very much for your precise and accurate explanation - it is much appreciated (and it worked!).
