Software Installer vs System Update 2 ?
Software Installer vs System Update 2 ?
My son and I each have a T41 2373-2FG, configuration as below. Mine is 2.5 yrs old and has 11MB wireless connection while his is about 1yr old and has 54MB wireless.
So far as I remember, both T41s arrived with Update Connector (or whatever it was called) installed, and we've both been fairly scrupulous about updating IBM drivers etc every few months.
However, I find that using only the automatic facililty to install updates, I now have System Update 2 while he has Software Installer. Both seem to work fine, though I had to restore his system to an earlier restore point when I fell foul of the PC doctor 5 problem.
Does anyone know why I now have SU2 while he has SI? How do you change from one to the other?
I've just joined this forum and am really impressed with how helpful people are - Many thanks

still confused - Software Installer v System Update 2
Thanks Nick Y for comment.
However, I've read the write-up on both programs on the Lenovo website and I still don't understand the difference between SI & SU2, and I don't see why I need both on a T41.
I have just installed latest SI v4.01.0615 from Lenovo website and compared its list of update options & recommendations with that from SU2 (v2.00.0084a).
SU2 showed the correct list of all recent updates, as checked individually against the Lenovo site. For example, it showed v2.23 for the Easyeject utility.
SI showed the same installed version of each component as SU2, but also showed that EARLIER versions of the software were available, which doesn't make sense. For example, SI showed that v2.23 was installed but that 2.02 was also available.
Based on this evidence, I have uninstalled SI and I intend to rely on SU2 in the future. Is this sensible?

I'm not clear about the differences either, as they seem to update different things, but with an overlap...
SU2 does at times give older items, which is confusing.
I have both, even though I believe both to be flawed. Hence I now treat both with great care and, after the mess up I had last week with the Bluetooth update, am glad I have Acronis True Image to rescue me.
I suggest that it is worth reading http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=35096 where some of the differences are being discussed.
One other aspect I found: My demon ISP has a hyphen in the proxy address, which SU2 cannot handle. Took me a while to work that one out, so I have to disable the proxy every time (infrequently) I run SU2.
I think that it is worth having both, even if only to check occasionally and not necessarily accept as even the IBM/Lenovo software matrix can be a bit haphazard.

I didn't realise that this topic was already live in another thread. May I suggest we concentrate all future discussions on Software Installer vs System Update 2 on the thread below.
