wireless problem...PLEASE help!!!

#1 Post by vrs626 » Wed Sep 08, 2004 1:03 am

i've been using my dad's t41p for the past couple of weeks and never once had a problem with the wireless connections. my t42p came a couple of days ago, but it cant seem to consistantly hold on to a wirelss connection. it has an intel pro 2200bg card but the mbps keeps fluctuating and about every 10-15 minutes i get kicked off aim and msn messenger. this happens when the signal strenght gets to low. almost immediatly the signal strength kicks back up to excellent and i can sign back on. this is getting very annoying and furstrating, especially considering that i didnt have this prolem with the t41p...any thoughts?? does this sound like a problem with my comp or with my internet provider?

First of all, make sure you manually type in the network's SSID. Mine would try to jump on the neighbor's network periodically (the signal was probably stronger for a few seconds). This would cause a disconnect as it tries to get an ip from the new network.

Also, there are tons of things that can cause interference with 2.4Ghz networks, cordless phones are horrible, try talking on one in front of your comp with wifi enabled. Also microwave ovens tend to kill wifi signals.

Go into network properties and make sure "802.11x authentication" is unchecked. Check all network connections for this.

what advantages are there for leaving 802.11x auth on? and why should it be turned off?
