Taskbar issue

#1 Post by jbowman » Thu Dec 28, 2006 10:19 am

Hello

My issue is with removing icons from the tasbar on my X41.
I right click on the start button, select properties, click Taskbar and then customize. I then select an item and choose "always hide". So far, so good. Yet when the machine is restarted, it reappears. I have done this procedure from both Admin account & non Admin. Same result. How can I remove this Icon?

Thank you

I'm not exactly sure which icons you refer to. If you refer to the quick launch icons, which are generally to the left in the default configuration and will launch programs, here is how to get rid of them (although most find them useful):

Do a right click in an empty part of the taskbar. Click on "properties." When the dialog box comes up, uncheck "show quick launch." Then click "apply," then close the properties box with "ok" or by clicking the "X" on the top right. That should do it.

If instead what you want to do is to get rid of some specific quick launch icons and leave the rest, right click on the specific icon and select "delete" or somesuch, confirm your choice, and it will go away.

This is really a Windows issue, nothing to do with the X41. But it appears that sometimes XP does not recognize that the tray icon has been set as hidden and displays it anyway -- I get that occasionally, too.

Alas, I am not aware of a fix for this.

This happens to me on all my machines and occasionally go back and rehide them, lately I have just pretty much given up and am used to the look, I autohide my task bar so the whole thing is gone most of the time. :)

I think most people have had this problem. What really urks me is when I select always hide, move onto the next item, and suddenly the previous one I hid has reverted itself to always show.

.... and one more sweet treat; I recently unchecked the Quick Launch option on the toolbar screen and those icons went away; immediately decided I really needed to see them and went back and re-checked Quick Launch - they came right back up but are now all scrambled from my original placement and really tiny. I did sort it all out getting them back to their original placement and big, but all that changed itself in a matter of 30 seconds?

@Purcy: Quicklaunch is actually just a folder which contains some shortcuts. When you "remove" it and put it back again, the list of shortcuts will be sorted alfabetically.

To view the quicklaunch folder: on quicklaunch: right mouse / open folder.
If you want to give them a permanent order you could rename the shortcuts with a number so they are sorted alfabetically in the order you want.

I would do it this way:
- Drag all the shortcuts (from the folder) into Ant renamer.
- Put them in the right order.
- Click the "actions" tab in Ant renamer.
- Click "Enumeration".
- Mask: "%num%%name%%ext%".
- Click "Go".
The files are now renamed.
To add a shortcut you could do exactly the same, but you would only have to put the new shortcut at the right place before again doing the enumeration. (so not sort all the shortcuts again, because they alreaddy are)

There probably are easier ways to do this, but I know this works.

Well thank you very much for that info! I think I shall just leave my quicklaunch toolbar showing, as it is handy. Sometimes I just hate seeing a lot of clutter, but then I have my toolbar autohiding, so that solves that.

There's a really nice utility called PS Tray Factory that will allow you complete control over your system tray. Hide or arrange the icons any way you want:

I have been using SysTrayX for couple years now and I'm pretty happy with it.
