T30 Operating Temps

#1 Post by ronbo613 » Thu Dec 28, 2006 1:31 pm

Since installing a 7200rpm hard drive, I've been checking out the operating temps with Mobilmeter.
At desktop, with no programs running, the HD temp is 36C, the system temp ranges from 36C to 40C, not sure what is causing the fluctuation there, maybe a fan kicking on and off?
The drive temps go to about 41C while in use, system temp about 41-42C, maybe a little higher.
Do these temperatures look normal? This is my first Thinkpad, I don't have anything to compare them to.

You're well below what I would consider average, from past experience. When you get idle temps in the 60's, that's when you should be concerned.

If you want to keep the system even cooler (CPU), try TPFancontrol, located in the T4X area.

Glad to hear that. New 7200rpm drive, 512MB RAM added a little while ago to the stock 256MB, spare hard drive in the file cabinet, USB2.0 PCMICA card, the T30 is just about where I want it. About $150 total for the new upgrades.

The really good news is that I'm just about finished asking lame upgrade questions.

40C on the hard drive is actually cool, mine stays in about 50C and it's a 5400rpm drive.
also to cool down further [althow i don't think it's possible to lower that 40C temp] you should put in more ram. thats like a rule of the industry: more ram = less hard drive activity as windows will tend to use the swap less if it has more ram to deal with.
in your case i can't figure out how is it possible to have such a cold 7200rpm drive. Can you tell me what model and manufacturer is the drive? i'm looking for an upgrade and a cold drive wold be nice :)

LE: now i see u have 768mb ram and it looks ok if u have a cool drive and u don't use hard drive intensive apps, so at this point adding more ram wouldn't make your drive stay cooler than it already is.

I was a bit worried about some of the problems some of the members here have had with cloning hard drives so I'm very happy the way things turned out. I like Seagate drives, but after reading the posts here, it seemed the Travelstar would be the best call for the older IBM laptops, that certainly seems to be the case. Not a fan of Norton products, I think Acronis is the way to go, maybe not Ghost.
If the system temps were too high, I probably would have taken the computer apart and reseated the CPU heatsink/fan with Arctic Silver 5.
This is my first laptop, with the upgrades, I am really stoked. It's a nice, hard working computer I can take on the road. Having a backup hard drive is worth the money to me.
