Palmrest without touchpad?

#1 Post by jawhitti » Wed Sep 08, 2004 2:09 pm

I've read that some of you guys have found palmrests without the dorky touchpad. IMO the T23 had the best laptop ergonomics *ever* (the blue "scroll" button was below the two red buttons rather than in between, and there was no goofy touchpad). I was quite sad when they messed it all up with the T30s - I found them way more uncomfortable to use.

So, I just ordered a a T42p (2373-GXU). Is there any way for me to get the button setup from my beloved T23 onto the T42? Where are you guys finding palmrests w/o touchpads? and what is the button setup like?

The 3 buttons are attached to the keyboard. So replacing the touchpad-palmrest with a touchpad free one doesn't help.

Bill is odd too - he's the guy that provides this forum - and he doesn't like the Touchpad either. I've yet to hear him call it "dorky" or "goofy" but then at the present time he's probably rebuilding his house and looking for lost parrots since the hurricane...

Anyway, I think you're in luck if you've a 14" T42 - less so if you've a 15" screen. Simply go to the IBM site and look for accessories (or replacement bits) for the R50 series as they're supposed to fit.

I personally think the touchpad is brilliant, but then I also drive a Fiat UNO at times...

Oh yes, while you're on the IBM site, don't bother searching for "dorky palmrest for T42" now will you...

You said that things were messed up with the T30, but my T30 came without the TouchPad! :)

True no touchpad on the 30s, but I found the scroll (button) very comfortable when it sat "below* the left/right mouse button. The T30 series IIRC jammed it up between the two red buttons (where it sits now), which IMO completely f'ed up the ergonomics. It would almost be okay if there was a smooth ridge across all three buttons, but the current setup is markedly uncomfortable for my thumb. I can't be the only one to have noticed this..?

First, T30s had the touchpad as an option, depending on the model.

Second, how can you say the old trackpoint scroll button below the others was better???? You must have longer thumbs than I do, because I hate it. I occassionally have to use a T23 and absolutely hate the scroll button setup. It's perfect how it's inline and reversed with the others. You can be reading a page and you thumb barely has to move between left-click and scroll buttons! If they went back to the old way I'd (shudder) start using the touchpad!
