T42p Fan Speed

#1 Post by zentao » Sun Dec 31, 2006 7:57 pm

I have T42p which has an overheating problem.

I have downloaded the T43 fan speed utility and i have noticed that the fan speed on my machine never changes - it is always at the same ~2800 rpm

The utility says that the setting is on max - 2800
If i use the manual override still 2800

any ideas guys ?

Assuming you are facing the same condition even after a clean install of the OS.....

Clean up the fan, and verify the thermal interface material is in good condition.

Is the removal and replacement of the fan something that can be done by a user with just a screwdriver ?

i actually have a second t42 ( tho not a T42p ) and i was concidering switching the fans if nothing else works - is this a viable option bearing in mind i have no experience in this area ?

It depends, if the second laptop you have have a dedicated graphic chip you may do the swap, otherwise, is not recommended to swap fans. Call IBM support and make them send you a new fan.

While I have not opened my T42, it is my understanding that the fans can be replaced on the T4x series. Note there is a long fan and a short fan. See following for a parts list and the Hardware Maintenance Manual for removal instructions.

System service parts - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p

Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad T40/p, T41/p, T42/p
