ethernet question

#1 Post by FunkyRes » Mon Jan 01, 2007 5:58 am

My T20 (2648 700MHz) I believe never had the internal ethernet.
Has the jack, but no mac address printed on bottom - and no operating system sees it.

I do have an IBM brand cardbus card - but it sure would be nice to just have Cat 5 into my dock work.

Would this part on eBay give me ethernet?

Big long link

TIA

The picture looks similar to the correct part but it is hard to say with such an inadequate description. The seller could have provided a part number.

The part number quoted in the eBay auction (26P8181) and shown in the pictures is for the T23's ethernet daughter card. I believe that the T20 system should use the same thing as my T21; a MiniPCI combo (modem and ethernet) card such as 00N8117 or a straight MiniPCI ethernet card 10L1423. These part numbers are the ones listed in the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

The MiniPCI cards are the only things you can insert into the slot on the bottom of the system for the T20, T21 and T22 systems. The T23 has the MiniPCI slot as well as the connector for the ethernet daughter card you have referenced from eBay. The combo cards will have two connectors on them. The smaller one is for the modem and the larger one is the ethernet. Your T20 should have two matching plugs inside the MiniPCI bay.

I just searched eBay for 00N8117 in both the title and description and found several for under $10.

btw - I've installed card (the combo one - I don't think I'll ever need 56k but who knows) and it works just swell. Thanks!

Now I just need to get ahold of some ram (I have 2x128 - I want 2x256) and a replacement DVD drive.

Oh - and I need to get some more cat5 to run under the house ...

You can get Cat 5 most anywhere these days. Even the Lowes and Home Depots of the world sell it in bulk. If you want to look at a place with a more complete selection of networking stuff, try Milestek in Denton, Texas. They specialize in wiring. I bought my stuff from them when I ran wiring in my last 2 houses. Also, you can check large institutions like surplus centers of large universities. Sometimes you can get old Cat 5 (that they've replaced with Cat 6) or remnants of rolls for cheap and sometimes free! :D
Family Daily Drivers- T430s, T530, X220
Work- Sadly, the ThinkPads have gone away...... and replaced by HP ProDesk SFF drone machines :(
Other Projects- Edge 15, Z61m (Titanium)
Historic Retired ThinkPads- T42p, X20, A31p, 701c, 760XD, WorkPad C505

Yes - I'll be getting it from Home Depot. Hopefully they have it in something other than blue or grey as I already have both those colors running under my house to a couple rooms.
