Vista - Shutdown or Standby?

#1 Post by cxls » Mon Jan 01, 2007 4:31 pm

Since Vista's new default "shutdown" method is standby instead of a full shut down, I'm wondering what most people have been using on their ThinkPads?

On my desktop I use the full shut down because standby keeps all my fans running, and it's quite loud.

You can change the default shutdown button from standby to full shutdown. I did that, and complete shutdown my T60p at end of each day.

If I don't need the computer for about an hour or less, I use Standby. For longer than that, I use either Shut Down or Hibernate.

If you view the Start Menu in the "Classic" mode, the Shut Down menu always gives you both (and several other) options.

I use standby on my notebook unless I'm traveling, and then I hibernate.

There is another new option in Vista, 'Hybrid Standby' which is for desktops (i.e. save hibernate file but standby) in case you have a power failure when in standby. But it takes longer to standby.

Strange that your desktop standby leaves the fans running - on my Dell you wouldn't know the PC was on. Worth checking for a BIOS update perhaps?

There's unfortunately no BIOS update. :(

The problem probably has something to do with the fact that it's a self-built PC. :P

That would do it. I suspect your motherboard is the issue as the fans are always powered rather than shutting down. You could self-build it differently I guess or just stay as you are. You may also find hibernate is quicker to restart than a boot, but that is really PC dependent.
