What does it take to work in IT for a company?

I will have an Engl/Corporate degree this summer, and I'll need to start looking for a job. I do not have a degree in comp/sci, which might be a problem :banghead:. Has anyone gotten certified in Microsoft/Linux systems? I think the only thing I am decent at is screwing with computers. Please tell of your experiences and ideas. Thanks!

If it's to work with Windows-based networks (which is what most of IT is today), your best bet would be to have an MCSE if your degree is unrelated and you don't have related work experience, either.

If you plan to focus on UNIX/Linux (those jobs do exist, even if they are less common), you should research what widely-accepted certifications are out there. I know Sun has a wide range of Solaris courses. Another option would be to consider database admin (SQL Server or Oracle the most likely candidates) but that may be a tougher option if you have no background.

In any case, you can figure that it'll take some time (and hard work) to build up the evidence that you are capable of doing what it takes.

Comp-tia has a lot of cert programs. I did the Net+ course and certification test and am working on the MCSE, it's pretty time consuming, but the certs are what really get you in the door with no experience.
