PC3200 DDR400 on X31?
PC3200 DDR400 on X31?
Hi to everyone, this is a great forum for TP junkies!
On to my question: I just bought 5 sticks of 1GB (had a great deal) with the above specs and 200 pin So-Dimm DDR SDRAM Hynix, etc.
Do you guys know if this will work with an X31 if I put in 2 sticks?
Thank you!

It will most likely work.

Re: PC3200 DDR400 on X31?
The original specs of the RAM in the X31/X32 were for PC2100. Some of the last models shipped by IBM had PC2700 in them because PC2100 had become hard to find and the PC2700 was backwards compatible. Even though it was backwards compatible, that did not mean that it would run at PC2700, even if both sticks, or the only stick, of RAM in the machine was PC2700; it would still run at PC2100 speed.alanx wrote:Hi to everyone, this is a great forum for TP junkies!

I have to admit that I'd never heard of PC3200 DDR notebook So-Dimms, although my desktop is powered with PC3200 DDR desktop sticks. I'd thought that notebooks stopped using DDR RAM after PC2700 came out in favor of DDR2 RAM. But obviously, the PC3200 DDR notebook RAM must exist.
My best guess is that if you put one or two sticks of the PC3200 RAM into an X31, that it would default back to PC2100 speed and work just fine, but I don't know that for a fact. Since the machine was certified for PC2100 and PC2700, you would be on your own as far as getting it to work in an X31.
What I would do is to go for it, to put two sticks in and run the latest version of Memtest 86+ (or similar program) and run it through a couple of cycles which would take a number of hours. If it passes the test without errors, then I'd assume it was ok and I'd use it.

The OP already bought five of them.Ken Fox wrote:What I would do is to go for it
I did a search for "X31" and "3200" and found one person who had successfully used a PC3200 module in an X31.

I took the question as, should I try to use these RAM sticks (that I already bought) in my X32, or should I use them as bookmarks?
I think that Sodimms make lousy bookmarks; for one thing, they are too heavy and will tend to fall out of the book. This is why bookmarks are generally made of thin cardboard.

You should have no problems with PC3200 RAM in a machine designed for PC2100 RAM. I have done it myself (not an X31 though).
Incidentally, regular DIMMs make better bookmarks. The length to thickness ratio is much more conducive to their remaining inside a book.

Just so you know, that guy selling the 5 1gig lots on ebay has not had one person report any working sticks. He is selling dead [censored] as "untested".

This could be the best outcome. You could simply imagine all the memory intensive things you would do with all that RAM, but never have to actually do them. You could assume that the RAM will work.alanx wrote:As of today, I still have not received the ram but I'll post update once I test them.
This way, the only disappointment is that the box didn't arrive, not that you just acquired a bunch of thicker than normal bookmarks.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't want to imagine things just yet before I get them. Seller wanted checks and there was a problem with his address so my first payment was returned to me!Ken Fox wrote:This could be the best outcome. But thanks for those who answered my question.
