Need your advice on BSOD!

Last month I got my second T60 T7200 C2D 2.00 GHZ with ATI X1400 1 GIB ram 100 GIG Hitachi 7200 Rpm Hard drive running XP PRO everything was fine system is very smooth exactly what you expect from a premium ThinkPad few days later I added another 512 stick it has the same specs as the one preinstalled by Lenovo on my notebook after the installation I started my notebook everything was excellent but few days later I started getting the BSOD system halted! immediately I talked with my brother who is an IT and he told me to remove the extra ram that I installed and update my Bios to the latest and everything will be fine and I did that he also told me that its best that if I want to upgrade my ram to use the same model from the same manufacturer I said ok after the ram removal everything went smooth for 3 weeks until yesterday! I was watching some videos on www.metacafe.com and I opened my media player 11 and my system crashed! I received the BSOD after that I started my system and it started well I uninstalled the ATI X1400 driver that I installed from Lenovo restarted my system and went to windows update and installed the driver from there and after few hours another BSOD! I don’t want to lose my T60 and from what I read so far I think it’s an ATI hardware problem any advice would be highly appreciated.

No one can figure out your Blue screens for you based upon the information (or lack thereof) you have provided.

The first thing you need to do is to do a right click on "My Computer" on your XP desktop. Click on PROPERTIES. Click the tab that says "Advanced." Click on the lower button that says, "Startup and Recovery." Uncheck the box for "Automatically Restart" towards the bottom.

This way, when you have a bluescreen the system will not automatically reboot. You will have enough time to write down the information on the blue screen.

It will probably read something like "STOP" some numbers and likely a reference to something identifiable, if not by you, then identifiable if you put it into a search engine such as Google.

Generally, you can figure out with some degree of certainty what is causing your problem this way, and this should lead you to a fix, which could be either hardware or software related.

Windows XP is much better than its predecessors but far from an exemplary example of good computer code. Even with a nearly perfect system with no hardware defects, you can get occasional STOP errors. I get one every several months on my desktop and I've never been able to figure out what caused them since they don't follow a pattern. Since they are infrequent, I just put up with them.

Blue screens of the frequency that you report indicate either a significant hardware or software problem. They will continue at the current rate or even become more frequent if they are not dealt with.

Sounds like the memory that still in the system could be at fault.

Have you tried removing the 1Gb stick and running the system on the 512Mb stick that you previously removed?

Your chances of having 2 defective RAM DIMMS is pretty slim.

Have you installed any drivers for hardware not currently attached to the system? camera, firewire card, 3D controller, etc? anything that is starting its drivers, but can't find the hardware?

Today i sent it back to Lenovo.

When i gave them my T60 they told me if its ram or hard drive they will replace them and send it back to me in case of motherboard failure they will replace the notebook at least this is what they said! ill keep you updated thanks again Scratch.

Update

Today Lenovo representative called me here in Kuwait and
Asked me politely to visit them I said Ok so I went there and they offered me chocolates coffee apology and a brand new T60!
I hope I don't see that ugly error again thank you all.
