serious memory problem with ThinkPad R60

#1 Post by VecoR60 » Thu Jan 04, 2007 11:11 am

Hello everyone,
I have serious memory/VGA problem with my new notebook ThinkPad R60 (bought at date 09.11.2006.) When I try play of any sort of computer games (FPS/RPG/RTS) after few minutes my notebook show me blue screen with this message (In Windows is everything ok) :

Hardware Malfunction
NMI: Parity check / Memory Parity Error
Call your hardware vendor for support
The system has halted

I try fix this problem with many version of BIOS (1.07, 2.07 and 2.08 - curret using) but northing.
I run all PC Doctor 5 tests and it do't show any memory malfunction.
I contact IBM in my country (Croatia/local name Hrvatska), but their don’t find solution for my problem and tell me “with our computer everything is ok” (It thought surely be based on PC Doctor 5 tests)
My system configuration is:
ThinkPad R60
Type: 9461, Model: 54G, Serial number: L3B4527
- Intel Core Duo processor T2400e 1.83GHz
- 667Mhz FSB, 1 GB DDR2 RAM PC667 KingMAX (2x512MB)
- 80GB HDD 5400 RPM
- DVD Recordable: 24X Max
- ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 HyperMemory
- Sound: Intel High Definition Audio and SoundMAX
- PCMCIA PC CARD 1Type I/II and 1 ExpressCard/54 or 34
- TFT LCD screen 15.4” 1400x1050
- 56K V. 92 fax/modem, Gigabit Ethernet,
- Bluetooth, Fingerprint Reader; IEEE 1394; Intel 3945a/b/g; External Display (VGA), External Microphone/Line-In, Headphone / Line out, IEEE 1394, RJ-11, RJ-45, S-Video out, 3x USB 2.0
- Li-ION battery
- MS Windows XP Professional
I tested my memory with PC Docor 5 version 5.00.4240
I try many version of ATI driver (6.9, 6.10, 6.11, 6.12, Omega drivers 6.9 and official IBM/Lenovo)
Can you find any solution for my problem?
I be grateful for any help/suggestion.
Thx.

I think I'd try taking one of the RAM chips out to see if the problem persists. If it does, then swap them out so the other SODIMM or whatever is installed. That would at least narrow it down.

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

As it appears that you may be having a temperature related problem, try downloading a copy of MobileMeter from here:

MobileMeter at Softpedia.com

The program is pretty simple to install and run. In the General tab, enable the "Always on Top" option, you can display the system Frequency if you like, but the important one you need is ACPI temperature. There may be several thermal zones you can select. Try the first one (#0) since that's probably the CPU. I would turn off the "Graph" function and just leave "Display temperature" enabled. Do the same for all of the other measurements (turn off the graph option). You should be then be able to resize the window so that it's only wide enough to show 5 or 6 characters on each line.

Start running one of the programs that's giving you the errors. Keep an eye on the temperature readout. If it begins to increase and then the memory error occurs, make a note of the temperature.

Also, it appears you are running PC Doctor inside Windows, correct? If you can, try the DOS version of PC Doctor. A copy designed for your R60 can be found here:

PC Doctor for DOS - R60

Note that you will need five diskettes for this program. I am not much of a fan of running memory diagnostics from within Windows. I would much rather have a minimal operating system in which to fully test the memory. If the PC Doc version for your R60 is anything like what I use on the 600X and T2x systems, then it can be setup to run multiple passes of the memory diagnostic. Do as SafeHarbor suggests; only install one 512MB module at a time when running the memory tests.
