Upgrading Wireless in T41?
Upgrading Wireless in T41?
Hi
I have a T41, and it equipped with a built-in Intel Pro/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mni PCI adapter (read from Device Manager), and I believed that it is 802.11B version of wireless.
I would like to upgrade it to 802.11G version wth Intel Pro/Wireless LAN 2100 Mini PCI adapter, but have few questions before doing it. Please advice
- What Mini PCI should I get? and What part # that should compatible with my T41
- How/where to get the instruction of doing this type of upgrade
- Where can I get this Intel 2100 MiniPCI wireless 802.11 b/g?
Thank you very much in advance for all of your time.

Re: Upgrading Wireless in T41?
Either an Intel 2200BG or 2915ABG will give you 802.11g capability. Make sure you get the IBM/Lenovo OEM version of the card rather than the Intel generic versions, otherwise you will get a 1802 POST error message when trying to start your T41.ludu35 wrote:What Mini PCI should I get? and What part # that should compatible with my T41
They are on the Levono website in the support secction for your T41.How/where to get the instruction of doing this type of upgrade
Well I bought mine through eBay but you can get them from the Lenovo on-line web store and probably Lenovo retailers.Where can I get this.....
Cheers,
Bill
The Intel 2100 card (in my experience) was worse than useless. Mine hit the garbage can in a real hurry. I got the IBM 11 a/b/g card and never looked back. So either follow Bill B's advice (I have made the 2200 work) and Bill gives good advice, or try the IBM card. Mine works flawlessly and has done for years). ... JD Hurst

I have an IBM 2100B/G card that I bought to upgrade my old X31. It lived in the X31 for a brief while, functioning just fine, and then I spilled wine on the screen of it. I then sold the laptop (without the wireless card) on ebay for parts.ludu35 wrote:Hi

If you're interested, you can have it for ten bucks plus postage.

I recently replaced the Intel Pro/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI adapter (802.11 b protocol only) with the same a/b/g card that JD Hurst referred to in his post above, and I am quite happy with the results.
It is surprisingly easy to take the laptop (T42p in my case) apart to install the new card if you read the instructions! I was a little bit scared about doing the install myself, but it is not as difficult as it first appears to be. It does take a little bit of wiggling and coaxing to get the bezel that surrounds the keyboard (the part that has 'IBM ThinkPad' written on it) out - requires a bit of squeezing at the sides - but other than that, the dis-assembly and re-assembly is straightforward.
I vacuumed all the dust out of the little fan when I had the computer apart, now the fan does not spin as quickly and the computer makes less fan noise - not to mention that it does not heat up surfaces underneath it as much as it did before.
