T60p Wireless On/Off

#1 Post by zepp » Fri Jan 05, 2007 10:15 am

I have two laptops. My older is a T40p is a 2372-GU1 with an Atheros dual band wireless adapter and my newer laptop is an 8741-CU6 with an Intel Pro wireless adapter. I am running Access Connections ver. 4.21 on each machine. I have each one configured the same.

When away from my desk I connect to the Internet via the wireless adapter and when at my desk I connect via the Ethernet adapter.

When at my desk and I plug and unplug the Ethernet cable on my T40p the wireless radio will turn off and on automatically as needed. On the T60p the when I plug and unplug the Ethernet cable the connection switches but the radio is not turned off or on automatically as needed.

I've gotten use to my older machine and this is a nice feature since it turns off the radio automatically saving battery power.

Can anyone tell me if they have their T60/T60p configured to do, as my T40p is to turn the wireless on or off automatically?

Thanks
Frank

Wireless Conections

I have had both a T43 and now T60. I have never noticed the wireless to disable itself automatically when conected to an ethernet cable.

There is a set point in Access Connections when creating a profile that tells the system to disable one adapter or the other when the connections switch.

In order for it work you will need a "Home Wired" and a "Home Wireless" profile. Place these in the Location Switching list and you should be good to go. It works for me except mine is Wired @ Work and Wireless @ Home.

There is no problem with automatic switching between wired and wireless when plugging and unplugging the Ethernet cable on either laptops. The faster (Ethernet) is always chosen when available. It's just that the T40p turns off the wireless radio when plugging in the Ethernet cable whereas the T60p does not.

Hi Frank,

It sounds like you're trying to use a single profile with "Automatic" or best for the connection type.

If you have one profile set up to use a wire and another set up to use wireless; if they are both set to "Disconnect from the network when switching to a different location" and if they are both in your auto-location switching table then you will see the behavior that you're looking for.

I use a wired connection in my office on one profile and a wireless connection at home on another profile. Every day at least twice I move from one location to the other and the wireless radio turns on and off as required...automatically.

Let me know if you still have the problem after setting up as described in the earlier and this post.

Regards...

That worked Scratch, Thanks!

I guess it threw me for a loop when I had each computer configured the same in a single automatic profile and the T40p worked like I wanted it and the T60p didn't

All fixed now... Thanks Again!
