Does a NEC ND-6500A fit in a T42 ?

#1 Post by dodik » Thu Sep 09, 2004 11:02 am

Hi everyone,

I'm a proud owner of a T42 (2373-CXG) but without a DVD Burner. I didn't want to take it because of the price, the speed and it burns only DVD-R (or+R, cant' remember... :? ).

I was wondering if a Brand new DVD burner as the NEC ND-6500A which burns 8x DVD+/-R(W) and DL as well can fit in my Laptop. But my actual DVD/Cd Burner doesn't look like the same on the side where there is the led (The only side visible when it's in (I do not know how it is called, forgive the poor english of a french guy  )). Here goes a picture :

Price : 119 € = 145 $

What do you think ?

Cheers,

probably not since it's 12.7mm. The drives that fit onto ours are supposed to be 9mm

Ibm is not going to have a off the shelf burner fit in it's bay.

You can hope no but only the IBM drive will work.

This is not strictly true - the 12mm units fit the Ultrabay (from the 600 series up - I know as I bought one and it works) however those of us with models based on the Ultrabay slim have to be a little more selective - and search for the 9.5mm units.

Aside from the tray it sits in (a misnomer as this is in fact a series of three pieces of plastic which screw onto the back and sides of the drive and thus render it useable in the Ultrabay) these drives are all the same - and fit other makes of laptop (You know, the ones that start with D for example...)

If you're upgrading from a CD rom drive to a burner, just unscrew the 'tray' from the original unit and screw it back onto the new one. I mention this as these drives are usually sold without the 'tray' (being marque dependant)

Right, that's enough for tonight - back to the blanket...

PS.

Mostly from 'flocon-de-maïze' packets...!

I haven't the faintest ideas which models will fit - it's best to do it the other way around - find a model than check the specs on the manufacturers site...

Bon courage

Yeah, but the ibm slim DVDburner sucks.

Have you seen the specs?

only 2x -R burning. 1x-RW, and 1 (or maybe 2)x -RAM. Who the hell uses RAM any more? And who ever takes it out of its caddy-type thing (needed if you wanted to put it in this laptop drive)?

Also, it sucks for CDs. it only does 16x on CDs, rather than the 24x that is standard everywhere else. I'm still waiting for laptop drives to break 24x burning... would be very handy, but i doubt it's going to happen soon in 9mm drives. the 12mms, maybe, but i bet vibrations would get too bad in a 9mm drive.

The latest T42 Hitach/LG burn at 24x (24x/24x/24x/8x). :D

Not much help for those of us with older Matshita drives in our T40/T41, though. :(

>Who the hell uses RAM any more? ...........

(hands up) I use DVD-RAM all the time for important backups, no time wasting starting burning program and fiddling..... because you can copy files instantly "ala HD style"..... and it has the best error correction and longevity of all the formats.

In addition to Ians' comments, the IBM drive is actually a Panasonic/M a t s u s h i t a UJ-812. You may want to keep your eyes peeled for that model. Not many other 9.5mm drives available it seems, other notebooks seem to use the uj-812 too.... e.g. ASUS, Toshiba etc.

drives with 9.5 mm are still a bit rare...
If you want a real fast burner like the nec, you have to wait for smaller ones ore use it in an external usb-case.
