Motherboard upgrade...
Are there any X series thinkpads that their motherboards are compatible with other models?
I'm not shure but I think I read here that the X22-X24 are like that.
ThanX

Re: Motherboard upgrade...
I'm pretty sure you could interchange mobos from X31s and X32s, but because the processors are soldered in, you would then change the machine from whatever it started as to whatever it ended up with, depending on what mobo you put in.dakos wrote:Are there any X series thinkpads that their motherboards are compatible with other models?

the x40 motherboard won't fit in x31/32 case since the position of the motherboard are different, and outputs such as headphone and usb are located at different place.
cant really confirm between x31 and x32 but I know they do have same exact locations and such, even the bios.
only difference is x32 case is slightly thicker than x31, but as long as both are the same size then it is ok
but....trying to find a motherboard for x32 is too rare to be found...

X20/21=interchangable since only different is CPU. and the design is totally identical (Tried)
X22-24=Chassis can fit in MoBo between these range of model.
others not quite sure

Compatibility Issues
One of the easist ways to check for compatibility is FRU sharing. In the Lenovo parts list, X31 and X32 share almost everything except motherboard. The notable is the fan, the fan is the same so the size is the same. Further the Keyboard FRU is the same or is shared. That is not true with the X30.
Those are also the biggest areas for the X20/21 vs X22/23/24 compatibility. Though there are some fan issues for the X22 vs. the others. I just ran into that issue trying to part out a X23 for a X22 on which the fan had failed.
There is no chance of changing out the X40 with the X32/X31. First the LCD is not the same and the connector is different. Second the fan is completely different. The keyboard may have issues also. You would have to examine an X40 and X31 side-by-side, but I do believe the connectors are different along with the screw holes.
