I've seen pictures of new ThinkPads with both the IBM logo on the palm rest, and the Lenovo logo on the LCD clearplate.
Lenovo should choose one or the other. It looks stupid to have both, especially when the logos look so different and are on different parts of the computer.

Homebuilt PC: AMD Athlon XP (Barton) @ 1.47 GHz; nForce2 Ultra; 1GB RAM; 80GB HDD @ 7200RPM; ATI Radeon 9600; Integrated everything else!
As a new thinkpad user I was EXTREMELY confused by this. Here is what I have to look at when I pull out my T60p
http://i84.photobucket.com/albums/k13/c ... 007033.jpg
Is it Lenovo, or is it IBM?
I feel that it is now a Lenovo Thinkpad and that is that and the sooner they make it clear that they own it, the less confusion there will be.
That being said, I like that it says IBM because it makes it look old and people are less likely to steal it!

I agree totally with this - when I saw a T43 last month with the Lenovo name on the clearplate it sort of turned me off a little bit. Sure, it's representative of the transitional phase of the whole thing, but it just looked second rate and one of those afterthought sort of addons. And the pic above reinforces it...K. X60s will be the last for me. My next laptop will be a mac with Vista loaded. I hope it won't be too difficult to do so.milstein wrote:There is an image of to-be-released T61, showing that the IBM logo is removed from that

Re: T61: no more IBM logo
I previously said that I would like to upgrade from my T60 to a WS T61, but now I think I should hold on to the T60 because it's the last Thinkpad with the "IBM" logo. Without that logo, a Thinkpad just doesn't look right. So, it will be my last Thinkpad and I will try to use it for as long as possible. When it dies, I will replace it with an HP or Panasonic.berlin wrote:X60s will be the last for me.

Re: T61: no more IBM logo
Is that logo that important? What if your current T60 has your beloved IBM logo scratched off? (It's still basically the same IBM-unrelated machine China-manufactured)pianowizard wrote:...Without that logo, a Thinkpad just doesn't look right... I doubt if one can successfully shift to HP or Panasonic if one really want a laptop with top usability and reliability. Companies will improve, let's see
I like the 4:3 T60 more than the 16:10 T61 in rumours. But I tend to focus more on the design, construction quality, usability and reliability considerations --- less due to the IBM/Big Blue complex
Afterall, PC manufacturing is a tough business, and IBM called a quit.
We all like the Thinkpads, we should hope and push Lenovo so that they can hold on and continue the legend of Thinkpads

Re: T61: no more IBM logo
According to statistics, the Panasonic business Toughbooks have far lower failure rates than Thinkpads. The reason I haven't owned one is they are much more expensive than Thinkpads. The Y5 is the most ideal laptop I've seen: 14.1" SXGA+ with internal optical drive at only 3.4 lbs.milstein wrote:I doubt if one can successfully shift to HP or Panasonic if one really want a laptop with top usability and reliability......But I tend to focus more on the design, construction quality, usability and reliability considerations

PW, are you referring to the self-selected "surveys" run by the PC rags which ask a few generic questions at the manufacturer level?pianowizard wrote:According to statistics, the Panasonic business Toughbooks have far lower failure rates than Thinkpads.

Re: T61: no more IBM logo
I think I got the statistics from Wikipedia. Something like 2% for Panasonic Business versus 20% for other brands including Thinkpads. They are called "Toughbooks" for a reason.tomh009 wrote:PW, are you referring to the self-selected "surveys" run by the PC rags which ask a few generic questions at the manufacturer level?

How much trust do you place in the objectivity of those who wrote up the article? Anyone can go to Wikipedia and write up an article and quote you some statistics. In fact I can change that 20% to 2% right now, if I am so inclined.
If Lenovo can continue to use the IBM logo, Lenvo will. But per the purchase agreement Lenovo signed with IBM a couple of years ago, Lenovo can only use the IBM logo for a limited number of years. And I am guessing that by the end of this year, per contract agreement, Lenovo has to stop using the IBM logo.
Personally, as long as the Thinkpads continue to have their legendary build quality, I can care less about what fancy stickers Lenovo puts on these computers.

I understand that Wikipedia can be modified by anyone, but in this particular case, I believe those numbers. Panasonic's reputation is second to none.furrycute wrote:How much trust do you place in the objectivity of those who wrote up the article? Okay, I actually went to Wikipedia and read that article.
In that article, it says the return rates for major notebook manufacturers is about 25%. For toughbooks, it is around 3.2%.
The article does not specify which of the major notebook manufacturers it is including in this 25% return rate.
The Dell inspiron line? We all know the problems the Inspirons have.
The Sony Vaio line? We all know the problems of the lower end Vaios.
The HP consumer lineup? HP didn't clean up the mess with with their consumer lineup until recently.
It is unfair to bundle Thinkpad statistics along with statistics from these other manufacturers. For all we know, Thinkpads by themselves have a MUCH lower return rate, less than 10%.
Put this another way, if I bundle the return statistics of toughbooks along with the return statistics from other manufacturers (excluding Lenovo), than I would also have an average of about 25%.
Compare this 25% return rate from the major notebook manufacturers (including the toughbooks) to the less than 10% return rate of the Thinkpads, the Thinkpads appear MUCH better than the toughbooks.

No IPS screen, no trackpoint. I bet the keyboard isn't as good, and its layout is definitely non-standard. I know to you it's all about resolution and weight, but there are other things about a laptop that are important to some.pianowizard wrote:The Y5 is the most ideal laptop I've seen: 14.1" SXGA+ with internal optical drive at only 3.4 lbs.

Based on surveys by various computer magazines, the failure/return rate for Thinkpads is only slightly better than that for other brands.furrycute wrote:The article does not specify which of the major notebook manufacturers it is including in this 25% return rate.
Lenovo is doing away with IPS screens. I am equally comfortable with both trackpoint and touchpad. I agree the keyboards of Thinkpads are superior to other brands, which is one of the main reasons why I have been using such a big fan of Thinkpads (have used >20 since Sep 2002). But if other brands are catching up with the design and/or quality of Thinkpads, they become viable alternatives. For the Panasonic Y series, the Y4 only had a 4200rpm HDD and Pentium M, so it wasn't very appealing. But the current version, Y5, uses a standard 2.5" HDD and Core Duo. Combined with its amazing light weight, internal optical drive and impressive reliability, I think it's now the best candidate for my next laptop. Those of you who are not happy with the T61 should consider the Panasonic Y5.dr_st wrote:No IPS screen, no trackpoint. I bet the keyboard isn't as good, and its layout is definitely non-standard. Personally, I would rather take 2 T61's with that kind of money.
This is going nowhere. Take it outside, gentlemen.
