Lenovo started offering VISTA with ThinkPads!

#1 Post by phoenix_one » Mon Jan 08, 2007 5:15 am

Does this mean that all the issues between the TP's and VISTA have been resolved?

I just ordered a Z61m with XP Pro on Jan 3rd. The status still shows in process.

Should I change my OS to VISTA? It would save $100.00 on my order.

You thoughts are appreciated.

How would this save $100?

Presumably, you are entitled to a Vista Upgrade disk for $10, so if you are thinking that you would have to go out and pay retail for Vista later, you are probably mistaken.

Lenovo may be selling Vista-laden systems now, but the ship date is apt to be later than it would be with XP. Also, you are likely to have a lot of petty aggravations with Vista during the first few months as the worst of the initial bugs get worked out. For myself, I'd rather let other people deal with that and come back to Vista maybe 6 months from now. With the upgrade disk, you can "have your cake and eat it too."

Some aggravations with upgrading later would be that if you have a lot of software that has to be "activated," and if the upgrade process doesn't go well (and likely it won't) then you'd probably have to do a clean install of the OS. This could produce some irritation in trying to save the service partition, and with having to call software vendors for activation codes.

That's a very good advice. Get a machine with XP but also get a Vista upgrade disc, so that you can upgrade to Vista and try it, but if you don't like it you can easily switch back to XP. Definitely don't just change the OS to Vista, because if you want to switch to XP you would need to pay extra.
