No power, no light T40
No power, no light T40
I just bought a used T40 with a noisy fan. I tried cleaning and oiling the fan per a few posts here, but the noise remained, although the fan did run. Last night, the T40 suddenly turned itself off, and would not respond - no power light, no beep on AC power, nothing. A little while later I plugged it in again and got power and things worked fine for a few minutes then the same thing happened. After sitting overnight there is still no response - no power light even with AC connected. I have verified that I have 16+ volts at the power cord tip, so it appears to be something inside the T40. Any suggestions where I might start troubleshooting this problem?
Thanks,
Thanks,

Reseat the CPU. Put a small dab of Arctic Silver between the fan and CPU. Clean the fan's ducting with compressed air.
NEVER oil a CPU fan!
Sounds like the unit is overheating and shutting down.

Thanks for the reply -
I will get some of the Artic Silver - there was something there already, and I have cleaned all the fins and ducts. I read about the oiling on this forum, although the original instructions were here:

I was able to start the unit again by removing the battery and AC, pressing the power button 10 times then holding for 45 seconds. Now it boots, but shuts down before Windows loads fully. I am hesitant to buy a new fan now if I have larger problems.

Would it overheat just on boot up?
Even after being off for a couple of hours, it still won't make it through the boot sequence without shutting down - even though the fan is running. It doesn't seem like that could be overheating??
