T60p am I too picky?

#1 Post by stephanpark » Mon Jan 08, 2007 8:47 am

Hey guys,
Need a bit'o advice. The T60p has been being installed, updated, and generally groped hard. Now that I got a chance to actually look at the thing I am a bit disappointed.

1. 15" Flex thing screen has noticeable yellowing and is only color true at the bottom first inch. (yes, fiddled much with ICC and Brightness)
2. Combo Drive rattles the whole machine, sounds a bit like an elephant got a surprise up the back side when starting up...then giant bubble bee when cruising. Some discs are worse than others...it really really didn't like DaVinci Code.
3. Strange rodent arguments when running certain apps. I find it amusing that there may actually be hamsters working in there but it could become bothersome someday.
4. Fan is almost always on. I know, Dual Core shule core...but still. Chinese water torchure can be comforting in comparison (I'd imagine). Almost as bad as my T30...and that was a design flaw. (I hear its why there was only one T3X in the series)

Um, yeah.
So whacha guys figure?

Do I continue the Thinkpad run?...or has Apple finally gotten a serious shot as my next partner in crime?

If it was purchased it recently, I would try to get it swapped for a new unit. Or, at least, send it in to get worked on.

- I would definitely get the screen replaced. The whole point of FlexView is the fantastic color rendition.
- IBM/Lenovo should have no problem sending you out a new optical drive if yours is rattling or making noises like that.

You might also try setting the CD speed in the system BIOS. There are three levels: quiet, normal, fast. Also, when inserting a CD, I make sure to press down evently and fully, and then spin the disc with my finger to make sure that it doesn't have a "wo

My T60p is rock solid and near dead silent. Yours should be too.
Apathy is on the rise, but nobody seems to care.

Trying to find a local shop Lenovo Certified and all...but no way to know if any (and there are many in Los Angeles area) are better than others. Guess I'll just stumble into the nearest one then.

-sorry for the bump. y'all

My T60 does not work noisily when reading CDs and DVDs.

You can download Shimodax Fan control utility to control your TP fan. ;-)

Hey RonS,

I also do the CD finger spinning just to make sure that the CD is properly seated in the spindle and does not get stuck in my drive when i am running the program in the CD. :D

Hey, I spin the CD too...but I do it like a monkey, just too see pretty thing spin.

Maybe it's just some DVDs that aren't made to spin at the speeds these readers are capable of. But seriously, being defeated by too much white silk screening on one side?

I do have my Laptop mounted vertically on a pedestal beside my LCD for dual monitor action. Gravity could exacerbate the mechanisms inability to dampen harmonics. (but my T30 doesn't complain in the same setup!).

NS are you nuts! I just bought this machine, it's still under the return policy! I know you mean well to tip me on the utility but I run mission critical stuff on my machine...you know, land mind fields have less strict warnings. I'll leave that sort of tight rope act for people with enough free time to back up their machines everyday.

You never mentioned that, do you? :? Some people have tried that Fan utility control and it works.

BTW: Do you know what my username stands for? Nuisance Spirit.

I am giving you some suggestions about the fan utility control. I did not point a gun at you and force you to download and use it, right? Ok, just for your info, it works on all my thinkpads without a glitch. :-)

CheerZ.

Gd Luck ...

Chill pill Koh,
No, no gun to my head. A recommendation from a board member, a senior member had my hopes up. Maybe I over reacted when I found that this was hackware...then to read the MUST readme file? I realize its hackware boilerplate, but talk about a let down.

Basically they short of say that running the app will cause lesions in your private parts and conjure the ghost in the Grudge movie.

Tell you one thing, Shimodax's got his legal bum covered. Anyway, I am [censored] temped, lesions and all.

1. the flexviews have a mild yellow tint from the start from the cathode color they use for back lighting. Its just the nature of the beast, and I believe it helps to bring out more of the orange/red colors that bluer tint cathode have a hard time reproducing.

2. The CD drive might be uneven or faulty. See if you can get an exchange part.

3. The rodent chirping is the power management doing its thing. Many intel based units have this issue, many in various degrees. It happens in the deeper sleep states that the processor goes into, and can be lessened or completely removed by disabling the cpu power management.

4. Electronics like to be mildly warm, but not scorching. Can't have a dedicated graphics chip and processor consuming energy continuously without some mild cooling. Some larger laptops can get away with constant fans by having a much larger heatsink to absorb more energy between cooling cycles, but that also adds more weight. There are also other parts inside the laptop that require cooling that only get it from the occasional breeze that comes through. Just be glad it doesn't sound like the vacuum cleaner coming through the room like my brothers p4 based Dell. THAT was a [censored] annoying sound. My T60 on the other hand needs a hand put next to the output sometimes on low just to see that air is coming out.

I owned only one Volvo...saved my life she did.
I kept the floorboard framed and bedded in black velvet. Plaque reads, "She gave her's to save mine - 1996"

When I become a dad, I plan to get another, Ford or not.

So, do you have mildly yellow screen but the bottom inch or so is almost perfectly color pitched? I am comparing with a relatively good screen SamSung SyncMaster 214t driven by DVI with factory provided ICC...as well I made sure the FlexView was too.

Thanks a bunch 6 hope 7.

I would definitely get that looked at. Sounds most dubious. Especially the screen and the rattling drives.

"strange rodent arguments" gave me the biggest laugh I've had so far today :) Of course, if teh rodent in question is a particularly fancy wireless mouse then it could signify some subtle driver incompatibility. I've notiecd windows xp and certain wireless mice seem to not get along evry well, as evidenced by teh total reinstall i had to do the other day on my desktop to get the [censored] thing to work again!
