My CD drive does not want to eject

#1 Post by Stevesoura » Mon Jan 08, 2007 10:54 pm

Hello. I just got me a new thinkpad T60 today. Everything looks good until I tried to run a CD. Seems like it does not want to eject. There is no light or noise. I have tried looking for answers but not many helped. I even tried using a paperclip and openned the drive manuelly. Ive inserted a CD and not happens. What can be the problem? I just dont want it to be a broken drive, I just bought this nice thing.

I am not sure this will fix it, but give it a try. Go to My Computer, right-click on the CD drive, choose Properties, DLA, and uncheck box to: Enable DLA on your drives. Reboot and see how it goes. [rebooting may not be necessary, but it is still probably a good idea]

When you first turn on your T60 (while still at the Lenovo or IBM spash screen), press the eject button and see if it will eject. Also you could press the ThinkVantage button at the beginning of the boot sequence to enter into Rescue and Recovery. Once there, see if the eject button works. If it works in these cases, then it must be a software problem. If it will never eject, then it must be a hardware problem.

Thanks, I think my cd drive is dead. I just hope its my drive and has nothing to do with the laptop. If it is covered under warranty, how easy is it to get it fixed?

Are you saying that when you INSERT a CD NOTHING at all happens? i.e. the CD drive appears to be dead (the CD doesn't try to spin, no noise, no lights, etc).

Or are you saying that AFTER a CD plays correctly you cannot eject it?

You either have a dead drive, a problem with the Ultrabay connector or possibly a blown fuse on the motherboard. If you have no way of plugging in another Ultrabay device, or of plugging your drive into another Thinkpad, then it will be hard to tell where the problem is. Your best bet would be to return it to the seller and see if they can diagnose the problem.

Option 1: You have the thinkpad warranty so go back to Lenovo and request for a new CD drive and expalin to them about your problematic CD drive.

Option 2: Go and find a friend who is using the same CD drive as your thinkpad and swap your CD drive into their computer and see whether it works. And also use their CD drive in your thinkpad and see does it work or not.

And report back the following result. :-)
